1793935Suisse: De L'imprimerie Philosophique 1793. Hardcover. Near fine. A Lovely 1793 Printing of the Notorious Les Trois Imposteurs

The most ubiquitous and influential of the clandestine philosophical manuscripts

ANON Traité des trois Imposteurs A Treatise on the Three Imposters De L'imprimerie Philosophique En Suisse 1793. 1 blank leaf TP TP 3 168 i iii = Table des Matieres 1 blank leaf. 12mo. Later edition.

NOTE: This edition contains the six notorious chapters along with three Appendices: "Sentimens sur le Traité des trois imposteurs" by B. de La Monnoye pp. 113 - 144; "Réponse à la dessertation de Mr. de La Monnoye sur le Traine des trois Imposteurs" signed J.L.R.L. and attributed to P.F. Arpe and to J. Rousset de Missy pp. 145 - 163 dated Janvier 1716; "Copie de l'article IX du tome ler seconde partie des Mémoires de littérature imprimes a la Haye ches Henry du Sauzet 1716 pp. 164 - 168.

The publication history of this book has become something of a cottage industry for Enlightenment bibliographers. The authorship has been variously attributed to Lucas Faint-Glain Boulainvilliers Levier Vroesen Aymon and even to Baron dHolbach. Because of its heretical and blasphemous content Israel in Radical Enlightenment says on p. 695 that it surpasses infinitely in atheistical profanity even those works of Spinoza which are regarded as the most pernicious this text was long an underground affair never officially published showing up in slightly different hand-written versions and frequently seen incorporated with other texts. Its history is still confused by the fact that everyone involved with this work was so secretive an understandable position to take given the harsh penalties including death that could result from being associated with this text in any way.

The first printed appearance the text seemed to have been just a part of a larger work La Vie et lEsprit de Spinosa which had a tinypress run in 1719 by a Dutch printer see Israel Radical Enlightenment 684 & 700. The text of Traite des trois Imposteurs was then excerpted and avidly copied by hand and circulated among the most radical free thinkers of Europe who frequently paid exorbitant prices just for the privilege of owning a copy.

Beginning in 1768 printers became brave enough or government supervision lax enough that they actually began to print and surreptitiously sell various editions of the text. Offered here is a 1793 edition of this revolutionary and heretical work.

The short treatise presents a direct assault on the three great monotheistic religions and challenges the integrity of their founding figures Moses Jesus and Muhammad claiming that these religions lack any substance whatsoever and owe their success in the world to the fear that underlies all of their basic assumptions and pronouncements. In contradistinction to these three frauds the text claims that Nature as the only god that is acting within the world.

For more details and a scholarly discussion of this important work see Jonathan Israels Radical Enlightenment Oxford University Press Oxford 2001 especially pages 684-703.

CONDITION: Very good to near fine in contemporary full leather gilt decorated spine with title in gilt to black panel. Mior cracking to hinges. Decorative endpapers. Former owners bookplate to verso of front endpaper. Small elegantly scripted annotations to the first page of the Reponse and Copie pages. A wonderful copy of this extraordinarily important text of the Radical Enlightenment.

De L'imprimerie Philosophique hardcover

Side at Niagra Falls small oil stain at lower right hand corner else in very good clean legible condition.
Our knowledge both of Czech and consequently its orthography are non-existent the identity of the writer could probably be determined by someone without these constraints. The writer has evidently just returned to Europe from America via New York Havre and thence to Paris. He mentions and presumably describes some of the places he visited in America including Chicago Michigan including Huron Detroit and St. Clair Erie Buffalo Niagra Falls et cetera. An interesting and unusual letter recording a Czech traveler's experiences in America.

A fair complete copy.

Exceedingly rare First edition printed by Robert Malcolm of Glasgow.

The book was reprinted in 1845 with the title "Curiosities of Biography or Memoirs of Remarkable Men.: Illustrated by one hundred characteristic portraits". Apart from the title a page-by-page comparison of the two books shows them to be identical in content and even in pagination. The only difference to be found is the absence in the 1845 reprint of an engraving of Napoleon on page xii at the foot of the contents page. Although the 1845 edition has been represented by many sources as the first edition it is indeed a reprint of the rare 1842 edition.

The work contains 131 separate biographies. Nearly 100 of these include portraits of the subjects. Among the biographies are Margaret Finch Queen of the Gypsies John Case celebrated quack doctor Logan the American Indian Chief Eugene Aram executed for murder Dolly of the Chop-House Lord Lovat executed for treason Maximilian Christopher Miller a Saxon Giant Old Harry a famous raree-show man John Gale born deaf and dumb Patie Birnie a famous fiddler of Kinghorn Thomas Topham the strong man La Maupin a French female singer and duellist Matthew Hopkins witch finder general Owen Farrel a celebrated Irish dwarf Henry Blacker famous English giant Jonathan Wild "cold-hearted villain" Jack Sheppard celebrated criminal Sarah Mapp a quack a "remarkable female bone-setter" Jacob Hall celebrated rope-dancer Mr. Andrews a famous billiard player Joseph Strong a remarkable blind mechanic Peter the Wild Boy O'Brien the Irish giant James Mackean "cold-blooded murderer" Claude Ambroise Seurat the living skeleton Daniel Dancer a "wretched miser" and Valentine Greatrakes "renowned in the annals of quackery".
Glasgow: Printed for Richard Griffin and Company, 1842. hardcover
