15024'5th. April 1786.'. Nicely printed on thick watermarked laid paper roughly 56 x 78 cm. Plate dimensions roughly 40.5 x 64 cm. Even creases from folding of map four times. Fair with a little discoloration along folds and very slight wear and loss fold junctions. At foot of plate: 'The Scale is 96 Rods to One Inch.' Only two copies of this item located: the first in the British Library Department of Maps describes it as showing 'existing and intended drainage systems. Engraving style and date suggests hand of Charles John Downes engraver for maps accompanying Hasted's History of Kent'. The other reference to a copy RYE/132/25 26 in the Archive of Rye Corporation at East Sussex Record Office the entry for which states that the map 'Shows principal sewers bridges and sluices to illustrate proposed embanking of Salts Channel W. of Five Waterings Sluice and Sewer in Playden and Iden and a new cut to the Rother. Conventional drawings of churches houses and mills with their names.' The second description refers to a 'separate printed estimate of the expense of the works' not present here. Captions include 'Late Mr. Jewhurst's now Clark's' and 'Where Craven Sluices did lay'. See Image. '5th. April, 1786.' unknown

Edition originale de ces deux offices solennels de paroisses d'Abbeville, tous deux très rares. Il semble aussi que ce soit les deux seuls offices publiés ainsi au XVIIIe. Un autre office, de Saint Gilles, sera publié en 1828. Le premier ouvrage, non daté, fut imprimé par la veuve Godard à Amiens. L'autorisation lui avait été donnée par le chapitre de Saint Vulfran en mai 1749. Il convient aussi de noter le lien entre les deux paroisses : le curé de Saint Georges était nommé par le chapitre de Saint Vulfran. L'église Saint Georges fut fermée en 1791 et démolie en 1793. L'office de Saint Vulfran n'est répertorié qu'à 7 exemplaires sur le CCfr dont 6 conservés à Amiens et 1 à Lille. L'office de Saint Georges n'y est répertorié qu'à 4 exemplaires dont 3 conservés à Amiens et 1 à Grenoble. Le second ouvrage contient plusieurs cartons. Pleine basane ca.1800, dos lisse orné, pièce de titre, tranches marbrées. Petites épidermures sur le dos, coins légèrement usés, quelques rousseurs, titre du second ouvrage taché, un feuille déchiré en marge, un feuillet cartonné en partie décollé. Rares ouvrages.

Some abrasion to the mount especially at corners; small flaw to image at upper left corner still Very Good or better. <br /> <br /> A lovely jazz-age portrait of Henry Georges Walter playing his trumpet probably in a Paris nightclub around 1927. Walter b.1902 was born in Alabama and studied music in the renowned Harlem studio of Isabel Talafierro-Spiller but seems to have spent most of his performing career in Europe. A brief notice in the Baltimore Afro-American for Oct. 19 1929 advises that Walter "will return to America in October. after being eleven years in Europe;" he was at this time performing with Opal Cooper's "International Five" a popular Paris quintet which also included Samuel Richardson Harvey White and Charlie Lewis. Little else is known of Walter; the 1930 U.S. Census finds him living as a lodger on 151st Street in Harlem with the occupation of "musician" but we find no further record of him after this. <br /> <br /> The photograph is titled "A Fény" with an address in Hungarian at left: "Váczi U Vaci Utca 11/B." The title which translates to "The Light" is possibly a reference to the influential Hungarian photographic journal of the same name published in Budapest from 1906-1912. We have been unable to satisfactorily identify the photographer. unknown

Lightly and uniformly age-toned last two pages with faint edge stains; near fine.</p> <p>Although similar in appearance this rare 1943 Alcoholics Anonymous item should not be confused with the more common 48-page booklet titled A.A. Tradition issued in 1947. In fact the text is entirely separate. </p> <p>The present booklet consists of an introduction and the following sections: “Am I an Alcoholic†and then three anonymous and anecdotal stories from four individuals: “The Doctor’s Nightmare†“The European Drinker†and “Women Suffer Too†and “Bill’s Story†Bill Wilson. This is followed by “Medicine Religion and Alcoholics Anonymous†and a page listing the “The Twelve Steps.†The text concludes with testimonials from professionals and religious leaders noting group’s effective approach “Our Friends Say†and a 2-page “Book Review†by Harry Emerson Fosdick of The Big Book 400 pages list price $3.50. </p> <p>This ephemeral rarity is held in America by 9 institutions the most notable being Yale Emory University Boston College the National Library of Medicine and Duke University.</p> unknown
19434211New York: Alcoholic Foundation Inc 1943. Very good. 281pp. Original printed wrappers stapled. Moderate toning spotting and edge wear soft central vertical fold throughout. One sentence underlined otherwise clean internally. An early pamphlet issued by Alcoholics Anonymous containing important doctrine from the organization's early years. The first sentence provides the motivation behind the present pamphlet: "The purpose of this booklet is to show how thousands of us who were once hopeless alcoholics have recovered from our malady. We have found a way of life which no longer compels us to drink. Alcoholics Anonymous is the great reality which has expelled our obsession." Later in the introduction the organization dispels any notion of complicated requirements for membership: "The only requirement for A.A. membership is an honest desire to stop drinking." The pamphlet also prints passages entitled "Am I an Alcoholic" "The Doctor's Nightmare" "The European Drinker" "Women Suffer Too" "Bill's Story" "Medicine Religion and Alcoholics Anonymous" "The Twelve Steps" "Our Friends Say" and Dr. Harry Emerson Fosdick's review of the famous "Big Book" Alcoholics Anonymous which had been published just four years earlier.
