Folding paper fan with a fine large hand-coloured engraved view of the Siege of Gibraltar with Spanish ships and troops in the foreground the verso with engraved key in Spanish decorated with weapons of war on either side mounted on ivory sticks the ivory sticks decorated in silver and gilt with a fort ship and flag the gaurdsticks carved and pierced and with silver and gilt depicting a ship and drums. The unsuccessful siege of Gibraltar began in 1779 and lasted until February 1783 when the siege was lifted. This fan which it has been suggested belonged to the Earl of Minto is not in the Schreiber Collection. unknown

Sixteen half-page engraved illustrations in each part; a single wormhole in Part II extends from p. 9 to the end expanding over the last few leaves to touch a couple of illustrations and with loss of a few letters the text entirely intelligible except for a few words in the publisher’s advertisements on the lower wrappers. But for the wormhole an exceptionally nice set in the original stiff printed buff wrappers these dated 1818 and with "Price One Shilling each Part." First edition of this revision rare ending with the American declaration of war against England in 1812 and the American defeats in Canada. The Dartons H1146 noting it as "a revision of the Newbery text" that text produced by Richard Johnson; the thirty-two dramatic engraved illustrations apparently are new. OCLC records the UCLA copy of both parts bound together without wrappers and Part I only with the 1818 wrappers at the British Library and Lilly; The Dartons adds Leeds University and the Spencer Collection for Part II. A very good copy the binding square and firm the velum and cloth with some light discolouration the edges a little rubbed and a slight bump to the bottom corner of the lower board. Without the silk page marker. The contents with some offsetting and spotting to the endpapers are otherwise clean throughout. Signed by N. M. Penzer in black ink on the half title. The first English translation of an anonymous account of a Spanish 1792 expedition to what is now British Columbia describing the geography flora fauna and the indigenous people that they came across as well as an encounter with an English expedition led by George Vancouver.
