1885000015bBrattleboro Vermont VT. Good. 1885. Softcover. A wonderful hand written diary written in 1895 by a very social woman in Brattleboro Vermont. It would appear that the writer unfortunately unnamed in the diary was either the wife of a Church Minister or the Church's Goodwill Ambassador as she spent nearly every day visiting and calling on Church members sometimes 8 or 10 in a single day. She names dozens and dozens of Brattleboro residents that she visited in her Diary often she brought baked goods or hand made articles of clothing to people. She also wrote much about the local Y.M.C.A. the Woman's Christian Temperance Union and other Brattleboro organizations that she worked very hard for. She wrote nearly every day most days filling the entire page missing only two days during the year when she was away from home. The diary has one page for each day of the year. Here are some quotes from the actual diary: "Jan. 14 1885 Cold but Fine. Did some ironing in the morning then went to see Mrs. Crowell found her better - borrowed some books. 1720016057The Netherlands: Unknown 1720 Book. Illus. by Unknown. Good. No Binding. ca. 1720 Good Condition Margins Discoloured see photos Sheet size: 40 × 32 cm; Image border: 33 × 26 cm A standalone anonymous satirical print from around 1720 issued as a separate broadside during the Windhandel speculative mania. Attributed to an anonymous Dutch engraver of the early 18th century The style corresponds to Amsterdam and Haarlem satirical print production of ca. 1719-1721 in which artists such as Jan Goeree Cornelis Troost and various anonymous pamphlet engravers were active. Without a signature however the attribution remains uncertain. Date Circa 1720 during the height of the European speculative bubbles South Sea Bubble Mississippi Bubble and the Dutch Windhandel. Dimensions Sheet: 40 × 32 cm Image border: 33 × 26 cm Condition Paper aged and discoloured with even browning/toning typical of 18th-century prints. Light edge wear and small points of foxing without any loss of image content. Impression sharp and complete. Description A satirical engraving mocking the speculative frenzy and widespread losses during the Windhandel. The composition is densely populated with figures chaotically trading worthless "acties" shares. At the centre are frustrated investors a man vomiting up his share papers another being pushed into a barrel and a figure rising into the air with balloons-a classic symbol of inflated expectations. In the background appear horsemen a crowd gathered around a tree marked "Vaanen" and a distant town. The scene serves as a moralising warning against greed gullibility and market madness. Explanation of the text The verses beneath the image are typical of satirical prints of this period: moralising rhythmic and intended to admonish the viewer. The text describes among other things: - how the "sick" speculator vomits up his shares - how the share price drops hour by hour - how the investor loses his money honour and peace of mind - how the city is overrun by beggars ruined by the Windhandel. The tone is sharp and mocking: the speculator is portrayed as someone who brings about his own downfall through greed and foolishness. Background information The print refers to the Windhandel in the Dutch Republic 1719-1720 a period in which: - countless worthless or fictitious companies issued shares - citizens invested en masse in speculative ventures - the market collapsed and many lost their fortunes. These prints were often distributed as pamphlets and served as social commentary. They were popular among printers in Amsterdam Leiden and Haarlem who capitalised on public outrage. The balloonist the barrel the burning papers and the desperate crowd are recurring iconographic motifs in Windhandel prints forming a visual language of warning satire and moral instruction. 1935055915Borçka Artvin: N.p. 1935. No Binding. Very Good. Eleven silver gelatine photographs. 9x14 cm. Two captions in Turkish on verso. "Çok degerli kaymakamimiza 9.5.935 Borçka Maarif Memuru Â. Özer i.e. To our esteemed district governor 9.5.935 Borçka Education Officer Â. Özer" and "1 Mart 935 Borçkada i.e. 1 March 1935 in Borçka". One photograph has cracked lines. Overall a fine group of photographs. A group of photographs likely taken during the 1935 Expedition for the construction of the Borçka Bridge over the Çoruh River. The set includes two photographs depicting traditional Turkish houses and panoramic views of Borçka a town near the Georgian border in Artvin and nine photographs focusing on the Çoruh River from different angles. The Borçka Bridge spanning the Çoruh River with a 113-meter opening and an arch height of 15.75 meters from the abutment was constructed using the Langer Beam system first implemented by engineer Josef Langer in 1883. The bridge was built by a team led by Turkish engineer Feyzi Akkaya 1907-2004. Akkaya became known for tuning Bridge No. 44 on the Erzincan railway construction site to the "A" note by attaching violin strings to it immediately after completing the Borçka Bridge. This method allowed him to monitor whether the steel elements were overstressed serving as an early precursor to modern "Meihak Gauges." In a photograph from this group taken on a pier over the Çoruh River among the gathered crowd which includes prominent Laz and Georgian figures of Borçka at the time Akkaya himself is likely present standing behind the two ladies. Although a bridge had previously been built here by the Russians it collapsed due to the Çoruh River's strong current and steep gradient eroding its foundations. Since then passage along this crucial route had been maintained by a cable-operated raft stretched across the river. One of the two remaining piers of the old bridge which had not been destroyed was found to be solid on a caisson while the other remained intact outside the area affected by the water's destructive force. These piers were utilized and to ensure a light superstructure a single-span design was chosen with wooden decking and iron being preferred. In one of the photographs with unfinished bridge construction and remains of the ex-bridge built by the Russians over the Çoruh River the ferries used during that time can be seen. The bridge was temporarily accepted in August 1935 and was officially opened by Prime Minister Ismet Inönü on July 23 1935 during a ceremony as part of his tour to inspect the eastern provinces. Borçka is a town in Artvin Province in the Black Sea region of Turkey on the border with Georgia. Borçka is reached by a winding road up from the Black Sea coast alongside the Çoruh River Nigali Valley. There is a medieval stone arched bridge across the river just west of the town. The Chorokh is a river that rises in the Mescit Mountains in north-eastern Turkey flows through the cities of Bayburt Ispir Yusufeli and Artvin along the Kelkit-Çoruh Fault before flowing into Georgia where it reaches the Black Sea just south of Batumi and a few kilometers north of the Turkish Georgian border. The Chorokhi Valley lies within the Caucasus ecological zone which is considered by the Worldwide Fund for Nature and by Conservation International as a biodiversity hotspot.
