Three scarce early 18th-century Latin works bound in one volume and previously owned by British politician The Right Hon. Charles Bathurst. A truly fascinating and scarce collection of three early eighteenth century Latin works exploring philosophy theatre and literature. Included in this volume are the following works: Menandri et Philemonis Reliquiae Quotuot Reperiri Potuerunt; Graece et Latine a new edition of this work published by Thomas Lombrail in 1709. This work explores the theatre plays and literature of ancient Greek writers Menander and Philemon and includes numerous notes by Hugo Grotius and Jean Le Clerc. It is in Latin and includes some passages in Greek. It contains two engraved plates though the frontispiece has been bound opposite page one. Collated and complete. Signature: 16 A8-Cc3 Emendationes in Menandri et Philemonis Reliquias the first edition of this work published in 1710. This was written by English classicist Richard Bentley and was a critique of the literary analysis of Jean Le Clerc in regards to the works of Menander and Philemon.Signature: 20 A8-I4 Theodori Sellii Vesaliensis Specimen Observationum Miscellanearum the first edition published by Lugduni Batvaorum in 1718. This is a collection of philosophical thoughts from Theodore the Chair of Vesalius Theodorus Sellius. Containing a charming engraving to the title page as issued. Signature: 4 A8-L1This copy was previously owned by The Right Honourable Charles Bathurst of Lydney Park noted by his bookplate to the front pastedown. Charles Bathurst nee Bragge was an eighteenth and nineteenth century British politician serving as MP for Monmouth Bristol Bodmin and Harwich. He held various political appointments throughout the early nineteenth century. In full parchment binding. Externally wear and darkening to the boards and especially to the spine where there is some loss to the binding. Previous owner's bookplate to the front pastedown. Internally firmly bound. Hubbed spines bear two black labels accentuated in a lovely guilt design. Written in Latin with some Greek. Red and black title page with frontispiece engraving within Volume One 534 pp. Volume Two contains a black title page with a small angel engraving. Continuously paginated Volume Two is pages 539 through 1040; and contains Hugonis Grotii Mare Liberum sive De jure quode Batavis competit ad Indicana Commeria Dissertatio. Ad Principes Populosque liberos Orbis Christiani at the back paginated separately 1-43. Volumes conclude with an unpaginated index. On a shelf these two books span 3 1/2 inches.
