Hugo Grotius' much-reprinted treatise giving his arguments for the superiority of Christianity - in all its forms - to other world religions first published in 1627 and adapted from Dutch verses written during Grotius' imprisonment convicted of treason after the fall of the Oldenbarnevelt regime whose pragmatic advocation of relative religious tolerance was shared and shaped by Grotius he escaped thanks to the ingenuity of his wife Maria van Reigersberch who arranged for his escape from prison in a book chest. This and the title page have this same owner's stamp. The paper edges are aged and benignly worn. The top trims of the pages have some storage marks.
