A handsome set. $1250. Later Gronov edition. With side-notes and index. Of all his numerous works De Jure Belli ac Pacis will always be considered Grotius's magnum opus the work upon which his reputation most solidly rests. "The distinction between religion and law or morality is not clearly made but Grotius' principle of an immutable law which God can no more alter than a mathematical axiom was the first expression of the droit naturel the natural law which exercised the great political theorists of the eighteenth century and is the foundation of modern international law" Carter and Muir. The first Gronov edition one of the most important editions of Grotius was published in 1663. Our 1712 copy includes Mare Liberum or Freedom of the Seas 1609 Grotius's influential treatise on maritime law and the right of free navigation. As indicated by his title Grotius's study is in three parts designated "three books" Libri Tres. An owner of this copy took that statement literally and had it bound as a three-book set. The index was also moved to the beginning of the first book. Carter and Muir Printing and the Mind of Man 125. Ter Muelen and Diermanse unknown books

First published in Paris in 1625 The Rights of War and Peace established the system of modern public international law based on the concept of "droit naturel" a morality-based law that superseded the personalities of individuals or nations. Grotius describes the situations in which war is a valid tool of law enforcement and outlines the principles of armed combat. Though based on Christian natural law Grotius advanced the novel argument that his system would still be valid if it lacked a divine basis. In this regard he pointed to the future by moving international law in a secular direction. The first English edition an abridged translation by Clement Barksdale was published in London in 1654. It was reissued twice in 1655. This translation by Evats which includes original notes followed in 1682. These early English translations both by Oxford-based theologians mark an important phase in the reception history of this book. 1935029041Madrid: Tipografia de Archivos. 1935. An elaborate volume on the prehistoric cave paintings of Altamira updating a 1906 edition by Breuil and Emile Cartailhac. Large quarto with 52 plates both black & white photographs and full color plates reproducing Breuil's original drawings of the animals in the Altamira frescoes. A number of the color plates are double pages; all are protected with tissue guards. The caves at Altamira were discovered in the 1870s and were the first caves to be found that contained prehistoric artworks. Their Spanish discoverers were ridiculed for claiming that the paintings belonged to people of the Upper Paleolithic era and it wasn't until decades later after numerous other such caves had been found around Europe that this became a generally recognized truth. Breuil a French archeologist visited the site and made drawings of a number of the animals depicted on the cave walls for the 1906 monograph -- notably in particular a species of bison that had been extinct in Spain for thousands of years; three decades later he updated and expanded his work taking advantage of increased access to the cave and newly available lighting. The present volume has more plates than the earlier one and all of the earlier images have been updated and improved. The discovery of the caves at Altamira was one of the most significant archeological discoveries of the 19th century changing forever our understanding of our human forebears. This volume was produced during the Spanish Second Republic the relatively brief period of liberal democracy preceding the Spanish Civil War and the subsequent forty years of fascist rule. A beautiful book in very good condition three quarter bound in leather and attractively and elaborately printed. Unless otherwise noted our first editions are first printings. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Tipografia de Archivos hardcover books

Hugo enthusiastically expresses his appreciation and describes himself as "only of the newest laborers in the struggle.of which his correspondent is a glorious veteran." In closing he would like to believe that France has made some lead ways as far as intellectual progress and human liberty are concerned.and hopes that they will meet "and it will be a joy to personally shake your intrepid and noble hand." Erfurt: Beyer & Maring 1800. First edition of this attractive and fascinating book which relates harmony to colors; it is very much a product of early German Romanticism. Dalberg 1760-1812 was an author composer and aesthetician. He was "born into a noble family.though physically deformed he was a virtuoso pianist. He studied composition with Ignaz Holzbauer and travelled extensively in Italy and England. His works about music and his compositions were published regularly in his lifetime and were regarded seriously by professionals. "Dalberg's writings cover such diverse subjects as meteorology penal law and translations of works on oriental subjects. This wide range of interest that hints at the dilettante is also reflected in his writings on music. Their topics included the music of India ancient Greek music newly invented instruments and the history of harmony."-New Grove Vol. 5 pp. 151-52. Dalberg was very interested in the nature of musical inspiration and in the present work he provides a history of harmony and relates various harmonic structures to certain colors. The wonderful handcolored frontispiece depicts a color scale ranging from deep blue to pale yellow. Dalberg associates diatonic and chromatic scales with darker colors and enharmonic scales with orange and yellow. Very good copy with some minor browning and foxing. hardcover books

Engraved allegorical title page engraved coat of arms of Pope Urban VIiI initial introductory enblem and 45 leaves of engraved emblematic plates by Boëce van Bolswert; 32 412 3. 1 vols. 8vo. First edition of the most popular spiritual love emblem book which made the genre popular throughout Europe in the 17th century and beyond. By the end of the 18th century the Pia Desideria had been reprinted nearly 40 times in Latin French German Spanish Dutch Polish English Danish and Italian. This emblem book mixes tender messages of care with dire warnings to sinners and while it is written in Latin demanding a well-educated reader it proved to be wildly popular. One of the keys of the popularity of this work are the emblematic designs of Boetius Adamsz. van Bolswert ca. 1580-1633 each of which is accompanied by an explanatory caption. Born in Bolsward Friesland Boetius was a pupil of Abraham Bloemaert at Utrecht and went to Antwerp around 1618 joining the painter's guild in 1620. Boetius also worked in Brussels where he met and was inspired by Pieter Paul Rubens. Herman Hugo 1588-1629 a Brussels Jesuit was teacher at the Jesuit College in Antwerp and confessor of the Duke of Aerschot with whom he went to Spain where he was appointed army chaplain to Spinola.
