A vellum-bound work concerning the lives of the important composers Haydn and Mozart and the librettist Pietro Metastasio with a history of the economy of Italy. The second edition of this work in a half vellum binding with marbled boards. Loosely inserted is a catalogue of the Mozart Museum in Salzburg published in 1937. Two volumes bound in one consisting of 'Vies de Haydn de Mozard et de Metastase' by M. de Stendhal Alphonse Levavasseur Paris 1831 and 'Storia della Economia Pubblica in Italia ossia Epilogo Critico Degli Economisti Italiani' by Giuseppe Pecchio Presso G. Ruggia e Comp Lugano 1829. The first is a history of the lives of the important composers Joseph Haydn and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and the poet and librettist Pietro Metastasio written in French. This work includes letters about Haydn and the life of Mozart translated from German by M. Schlichtegroll. The second work is a first edition copy of Pecchio's study of the Italian economy including a critical study of Italian economists. It was written in Italian by Giuseppe Pecchio who distinguished himself as a modern and original economist in both Italy and England. This work was influential for developments in political economy. L'ouvrage comporte, avec l'accord de Beyle, quelques pages de ce dernier. Il s'agit du fragment concernant les "Brigands en Italie" (p. 228-259), que Colomb introduit comment étant de "l'un de [ses] nouveaux amis". Le texte était prévu pour faire partie des suppléments à une réédition des Promenades dans Rome, qui ne sera pas publiée. Stendhal y étrille la mauvaise administration des papes et des "ministres acoquinés au brigandage" (Spengler), qu'il oppose à celle des Français pendant la période napoléonienne, qui "par des mesures saines et vigoureuses, continrent ces bandes d'assassins, et [...] firent jouir les Romains et les autres peuples d'Italie, d'une sécurité inconnue depuis plusieurs siècles" (p. 257). Cette thématique du brigandage, en tant que conséquence des abus et de la tyrannie, reviendra sous la plume de Stendhal dans L'Abbesse de Castro (1839). Les pages 458-465 renferment un "Catalogue des principaux ouvrages sur l'Italie, écrits ou traduits en français". Étiquette ex-libris "R.N." sur le contreplat. Bel exemplaire. Rousseurs claires. Vieusseux, 1840, in-8, Front, VI-358 pp, Demi-basane tabac, Le frontispice gravé sur cuivre par l'auteur, le peintre sur porcelaine Abraham Constantin (1785-1855), représente la maison de la Fornarina à Rome. Édition originale de ce texte écrit à quatre mains et publié sous le nom de Constantin seul. Stendhal surnommait cet ami proche "Tantin", "Tantincons" ou encore "Constantin Porcelaine", en référence à son activité. Ils furent compagnons au cours du long séjour italien de Beyle commencé en 1836. La part des deux auteurs est désormais bien établie, grâce aux travaux de Sandra Teroni et Hélène de Jacquelot, publiés en préface de la réédition des Idées italiennes (Paris, Beaux-Arts de Paris, 2013). Plusieurs observations ajoutées par Stendhal sont parfois empruntées aux Promenades dans Rome ou à l'Histoire de la peinture en Italie.
