1926FGN24-H-1Paris: Garnier Freres c1926 . Leather. Very Good Indeed. 8" by 6". None. Two excellent uniformly bound works by notable French authors in three volumes both limited editions. Two uniformly bound works by notable French authors. The first two volumes comprise of Alan-Rene Lesage's picaresque novel Gil Blas. Gil Blas follows the adventures of the son of a stablehand and chambermaid. Blas attends the University of Salamanca where his bright future is interrupted by his cooperation with some robbers. The novel follows his observations of many figures in society both lay and clerical. The novel is a witty work using class archetypes. The third volume of this set is Stendhal's non-fiction work De L'amour. It is an essay on love. Stendhal was a pen name for Marie-Henri Beyle. He is best known for his novels Le Rouge et le Noir and La Chartreuse de Parme. He is notable for his acute analysis of his characters' psychology and is considered as one of the earliest and foremost practitioners of realism. Each volume is from a limited edition print run with L'amour being numbered 128 of 1500 Volume I of Gil Blas numbered 108 of 1000 and volume II 102 of 1000. All volumes are bound with the original wraps in with the text. In uniform half morocco bindings with gilt-stamped detailing to the spines. Externally smart with just a small amount of rubbing to the head and tail of joints. A few handling marks to boards also. The front hinge to D'Lamour is slightly strained but firm after endpapers. Internally firmly bound. Small tidemark to the first few pages of De L'Amour not affecting text. Pages are slightly age-toned with the odd spot throughout. Very Good Indeed Garnier Freres hardcover
19254930Paris: Éditions Bossard 1925. First edition thus. Two softcover volumes grey covers printed in black. One of 25 deluxe copies on Auvergne paper. This is copy X. Two original burins engraved by Achille Ouvré as frontispieces including a portrait of the author in volume two. A fine copy of this first edition on sumptuous paper the second print somewhat in the manner of Laboureur shows a lady in a chemisette with her breasts bared surprised at the foot of the bed by the intrusion of an equally stunned man. In volume one. This print in fact appears in duplicate both as frontispieces. One copy has text beneath it the second is without. Clean grey card covers. However the card is quite brittle and has light creasing to the edge of volume one. To volume two there is some loss with a chip to a corner of the front panel. Inside the works are clean and tidy throughout. Some pages are uncut. XX 300 iv. 388. Pages. Text compiled and annotated with a preface and bibliography by Henri Martineau. 20.5cm x 15cm. Conforms to FirstSeach / WorldCat OCLC: 463808974 With the exception that we have an extra frontispiece. Also in BnF: FRBNF35698248. . XX 300 iv 388. Pages.
