Marie-Henri Beyle; 23 January 1783 – 23 March 1842 better known by his pen name Stendhal was a 19th-century French writer. Best known for the novels Le Rouge et le Noir The Red and the Black 1830 and La Chartreuse de Parme The Charterhouse of Parma 1839 he is highly regarded for the acute analysis of his characters' psychology and considered one of the early and foremost practitioners of realism. A self-proclaimed egotist he coined the same characteristic in his characters' 'Beylism'. Stendhal syndrome Stendhal's syndrome or Florence syndrome is a psychosomatic condition involving rapid heartbeat fainting confusion and even hallucinations allegedly occurring when individuals become exposed to objects artworks or phenomena of great beauty and antiquity. The affliction is named after the 19th-century French author Stendhal pseudonym of Marie-Henri Beyle who described his experience with the phenomenon during his 1817 visit to Florence in his book Naples and Florence: A Journey from Milan to Reggio. When he visited the Basilica of Santa Croce where Niccolò Michelangelo and Galileo Galilei are buried he was overcome with profound emotion. Stendhal wrote: 'I was in a sort of ecstasy from the idea of being in Florence close to the great men whose tombs I had seen. Absorbed in the contemplation of sublime beauty . . . I reached the point where one encounters celestial sensations . . . Everything spoke so vividly to my soul. Ah if I could only forget. I had palpitations of the heart what in Berlin they call 'nerves'. Life was drained from me. I walked with the fear of falling.' Although psychologists have long debated whether Stendhal syndrome exists the apparent effects on some individuals are severe enough to warrant medical attention. The staff at Florence's Santa Maria Nuova hospital are accustomed to tourists suffering from dizzy spells or disorientation after viewing the statue of David the artworks of the Uffizi Gallery and other historic treasures of the Tuscan city. Though there are numerous accounts of people fainting while taking in Florentine art dating from the early 19th century the syndrome was only named in 1979 when it was described by Italian psychiatrist Graziella Magherini who observed over a hundred similar cases among tourists in Florence. There exists no scientific evidence to define Stendhal syndrome as a specific psychiatric disorder; however there is evidence that the same cerebral areas involved in emotional responses are activated during exposure to art. The syndrome is not listed as a recognised condition in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. A more recent account of the Stendhal syndrome was in 2018 where a visitor to the Uffizi Gallery in Florence suffered a heart attack while admiring Sandro Botticelli's The Birth of Venus.</p> Chez Jean De Bonnot. hardcover

La Charteuse de Parme è, nella nostra epoca e fino ad ora, ai miei occhi, il capolavoro della Letteratura delle Idee, e Monsieur Beyle vi ha saputo fare delle concessioni alle altre scuole che le persone intelligenti possono accettare e che sono soddisfacenti per entrambi i campi.» Quando, il 14 ottobre 1840, il console francese a Civitavecchia Monsieur Henri Beyle, noto a noi come Stendhal, ricevette con il battello postale proveniente da Marsiglia il terzo numero della «Revue Parisienne», la rivista politico-letteraria fondata, diretta e quasi interamente scritta da Balzac, trasecolò. Più della metà della rivista era occupata da un articolo, un vero e proprio saggio letterario, intitolato Études sur M. Beyle, dedicato alla sua Certosa di Parma. E che articolo! In esso Stendhal veniva riconosciuto come uno dei maggiori scrittori della Francia contemporanea, un vero e proprio genio, e il romanzo il capolavoro di quella che veniva definita la Letteratura delle Idee [...]. Ma l’interesse dell’articolo non è limitato solo all’analisi letteraria che uno dei maggiori scrittori dell’Ottocento fa a uno dei maggiori capolavori della sua epoca, né allo stile in cui è scritto; forse l’interesse maggiore sta nel lungo riassunto che Balzac fa del romanzo di Stendhal [...]. L’articolo di Balzac ha avuto larga fortuna editoriale, ma in italiano è stato tradotto una sola volta, all’interno di un’antologia degli scritti critici di Balzac, da Mario Bonfantini nel 1958. Qui lo presentiamo insieme alle diverse risposte di Stendhal. Lungi dal voler fare un’operazione di esclusivo interesse filologico, si vuole offrire al lettore uno strumento per entrare nella psicologia di Stendhal.
