Collated complete. Le Juif Errant or The Wandering Jew was a serially published novel which was hugely popular in Paris and elsewhere. It was written by Eugène Sue 1804-1857 who made popularised the genre of the serial novel in France. This 1845 is complete in four volumes with illustrations by Paul Gavarni 1804-1866 a French caricaturist. This was one of the most ambitious of his book illustration projects. In half calf and silk bindings. Externally fairly smart with some shelf wear to the boards and rubbing to the spine and extremities. Fading to the rear board of vol I and a little to the front board of vol IV. Pages 11 to 15 of vol IV are coming loose but otherwise pages are firmly bound. Pages are bright but spotted throughout. The story evolves around the mythical figure of 'the wandering Jew' condemned to wander the Earth until the Rennepont family has been wiped from the earth.These copies are the 1846 edition lavishly illustrated with numerous illustrations in text by various artists.
