Two Stikeman uniformly bound volumes from the tale of 'The Wandering Jew' by Eugene Sue a new translation lavishly illustrated. Vol. I part II and vol. II part I of Eugene Sue's story of The Wandering Jew in lovely half morocco bindings signed Stikeman & Co. Originally published in French in 1844 popular in Paris upon its serial publication. The novel was considered intensely and deliberately anti-Catholic according to historian John McGreevy. The story evolves around the mythical figure of 'the wandering Jew' condemned to wander the Earth until the Rennepont family has been wiped from the earth.These copies are the 1846 edition lavishly illustrated with numerous illustrations in text by various artists. These copies were also grangerised with two-hundred-and-twenty-six full page plates some tipped in. In uniform half morocco bindings with marbled boards and endpapers and gilt to the top edge. Externally very smart with only minor shelf wear and minor rubbing. Internally firmly bound. The pages are generally bright and clean only the odd minor faint spot or faint handling mark to the odd leaf. Lavishly illustrated with numerous illustrations in text by various artists.
