19370001788BUDAPEST HUNGARY EASTERN EUROPE. Very Good. 1937. On offer is a unique original September 1937 through August 1938 manuscript diary that relates the life a young American girl named Sue as per the gift inscription who travels back to her ancestral country of Hungary for an extended holiday whose purpose was likely to find her a traditional husband. The pressure or desire for her to marry is apparent within days of her meeting her European relatives. 'Went to visit Gene's grandmother and aunt. Real congenial people .they talked to me as if I were to become Gene's wife .some dope thought I would fall in love with him within three days.' Sue writes wonderfully of her times traveling regularly to Budapest and the activities of a 17 year old American teenager abroad. There were movies and shows and skating and shopping and dining and more dining and opera and chess and so much more. She also enrolled in the Fodor School of Music. She begins with her travels crossing the Atlantic on the Normandie and then across Europe to Hungary where she stays with relatives dates dozens of men - mostly doctors - and visits the local sites for nearly a year. She does a super job also capturing the tone of the country and the events in other parts of Europe. In one she comments on Germany annexing Austria and how her parents want her to come home. In another she comments on the "Jewish laws" that they are unfair and that "everything is dead". Sue was insightful and articulate and one cannot but be a little chilled reading her personal account with the knowledge that World War II looms on the horizon. Green leather has a leather strip for locking the diary had to be cut. 184110854London: J. Clements. London J. Clements nd c1841. First Edition. First Impression. Hardback. A very good copy. A penny dreadful presumably. Six numbers bound as one with a title page and an author's preface dated 1831. Each part is numbered and pagination continues between the parts though there are no prices on each part. The story takes starts with a slave ship being boarded by a pirate Brulart who seems to be white not black. Subseqent to this a couple of years later I think one of the slaves Attar Gull takes revenge on his captors but suffers and dies cursing the white man. I suspect the inclusion of Brulart in the title of this 49 page piece is to bringing in the readers as the main bulk of the story is around Gull. Scarce with no copies at auction since 1932. Recently rebound in 1/4 calf with marbled boards. The binding is new so the description relates only to the text block. The leaves are mostly in excellent shape with the inevitable ageing and tanning a few leaves have a stain that doesn't affect the text's readability. There is some loss to text at the lower margin where the book has been trimmed at some point. 10854 Hyraxia Books. nd c1841 . Very Good. Hardback. 1st Edition. 1841. J. Clements hardcover

25479Sydney : Gwen Harrison and Sue Anderson 2012. Quarto 370mm tall full stained kangaroo with goat spine pp. 50 comprised of multi-plate sugar-lift and aquatint etched plates hand-finished with paint with letterpress text presented in a clamshell box. Limited to 6 copies signed by the artist. ""This artwork comprises a series of prints and a variety of texts including reflections from historical and contemporary writers that explore the silencing of the marginalised: from the oppression of Indigenous Australians to the exploitation of the English and Irish convicts to the dehumanisation of asylum seekers. In this work the artists seek to represent the way in which minority groups have been and still are denied their right to a voice. This 'Australian way' sits uncomfortably with our popular self-image and diminishes the strength and validity of our democratic society."" - Lessons in History Vol. II : Democracy Grahame Galleries 2012 p. 7. FREE UPGRADE to Courier/Priority Shipping Upon Request IN STOCK AND IMMEDIATELY AVAILABLE FOR SHIPMENT - FLAWLESS COPY BRAND NEW PRISTINE NEVER OPENED -- While the men of Classical Athens were fighting wars and producing great works of art what were the women doing According to some of the male writers of the period they were at home making babies and wool; others thought they were likely to be visiting their friends and partying till the small hours. This text investigates the many contrasting images of Athenian women which the Classical Age produced. Taking as its starting point women in the Parthenon sculptures it examines two levels of feminine experience: the human and the divine. The interplay between womens religious prominence and their domestic obscurity is discussed in relation to the young citizen women who lead the procession; while the great goddesses represented in the frieze are studied in terms of their relationships with human worshippers and on a symbolic level with the mythological females such as the Amazons who appear in the metopes. Finally the book turns to a third aspect looking at the women who do not appear in the Parthenon sculptures -- the prostitutes slaves and alien women who make a vital economic and ideological contribution to the Athenian achievement. -- TABLE OF CONTENTS: Acknowledgements List of Illustrations 1.
