This philosophical 'novel' – a loose translation of Theophrastus maxims and sketches – was <strong>written to expose the corruption of the reign of Louis XIV</strong> by identifying the mental characteristics of people. Bruyere wanted to correct people's flaws particularly those with cruel behaviors or bad manners. The original contributions by La Bruyère are primarily observations on character and conduct describing portraits of people and their failings many were thinly disguised descriptions of living people. Engraved frontispiece portrait of La Bruyere six additional engraved portraits by Benjamin Damman of Montaigne Descartes Le Brun Louis XIV William III and Bossuet. Fifteen of sixteen vignette headpieces engraved on tissue by Valentine Foulquier and mounted at chapter titles lacks "Of the Affections" apparently left out in manufacture and not caught by the quality control department. Bound in original quarter cream vellum over green cloth stamped in gilt. Corners rubbed; upper joint splitting near crown; gilt images on vellum spine rubbed away. <br /><br />Google found the rave review that appeared in the Daily Telegraph when this book came out. Let the last line stand in for the entire review: "Six portraits specially etched by M. Damman a series of lovely headpieces etched by M. Somewhat scratched spines creased small area of loss to foot of spine of vol. 1. A reissue of Edmund Curll’s 1713 edition with cancel title-pages done in a slightly haphazard manner. The works in volume 1 have been re-ordered to match the listing on the new title-page resulting in an inaccurate contents page and advertisement leaf for Curll’s publications halfway through the book and the engraved title-page for volume 2 retains Curll’s imprint and the date of 1713 a date shared by the title-pages of the individual works across both volumes. In addition to La Bruyere’s work these volumes contain an account of his life and writings attributed to a M. Coste and a chapter in La Bruyere’s style by Nicholas Rowe 1674-1718.
