Maler François Léopold Flameng 1856 -1923.Über den pariser Buchbinder Hardy ist leider wenig bekannt- Jean de La Bruyère 1645-1696 war ein französischer Schriftsteller. Der als Moralist zu den großen französischen Klassikern gerechnete Autor stammte aus einer bürgerlichen wohl erst seit kurzem in Paris ansässigen Familie und erhielt nach einem Jurastudium in Orléans 1665 die Zulassung als Anwalt am höchsten Pariser Gericht dem Parlement. 1671 beerbte er mit seinen drei jüngeren Geschwistern einen reichen Onkel und kaufte 1673 in Caen ein Amt in der Finanzverwaltung das ihn pro forma adelte ihm aber keine Präsenz vor Ort abverlangte. Er lebte vielmehr weiter als Rentier in Paris und dilettierte als Privatgelehrter.Als Randfigur im hochadeligen Milieu wurde er zu dessen scharfem Beobachter und bereicherte in der Folge die Theophrastschen „Charaktere“ um die Darstellung sozialer Typen der eigenen Zeit wobei er mit Vorliebe bestimmte adelige und pseudoadelige Verhaltensweisen aber auch allgemeine menschlich-allzumenschliche Schwächen Manien und Ticks aufs Korn nahm. 1688 ließ er ein Bändchen erscheinen mit dem Titel «Les Caractères de Théophraste traduits du grec avec les caractères ou les mœurs de ce siècle».Das Werk war dank seiner Thematik seiner Einteilung in kurze gut lesbare Abschnitte sowie seiner pointierten oft ironischen Formulierungen sofort ein Erfolg und La Bruyère erweiterte es von einer zur nächsten der neun Auflagen die rasch aufeinander folgten; die letzte kurz nach seinem Tod. Schweighaeuser which were first published in the 32mo edition of the previous year. La Bruyère's 1645-1696 work 1688 is a vivacious and lucid satirical description of the French aristocracy up to the end of the reign of King Louis XIV. Starting with a translation of Theophrast's "Characters" La Bruyère added more and more of his own critical observations with each edition thereby making numerous enemies. Nevertheless he was accepted as a member at the "Académie Française" in 1693. - Very slight brownig to the uncut margins. Ruled copy.</p><p>Full black Jansenist morocco blind-stamped fillet around the covers spine ribbed inner gilt border decorated gilt paper lining and endleaves edges gilt. <em>Bound in contemporary black Jansenist morocco.</em></p><p>163 x 96 mm.</p><p>Last edition printed during La Bruyère's lifetime who died on the night of 10-11 may 1696 the ninth published and corrected by La Bruyère.</p><p>It consequently contains the text definitively adopted by him with his final corrections and served to fix the text of later editions.</p><p><em>"Between 1688 and 1696 La Bruyère published eight editions of the 'Caractères' with changes and additions in each. Bringing them together in the same library is of some interest and allows the bibliophile to follow the different phases through which this remarkable work passed. The eighth and ninth editions contain at least twice as much text as the first".</em> Le Petit.</p><p><em>"La Bruyère has no equal when it comes to isolating the word the gesture the 'tic' that suddenly betrays an entire character. He is better the closer he gets to the concrete. Not that he seeks singularity for its own sake: it is indeed common passions and general types that he is aiming for but always taken in the moment of their manifestation and within the framework of a particular society: not the abstract man but the courtier the grande dame the magistrate the financier the preacher of the century of Louis XIV on the beginning of its decline.</em></p><p><em>It is true that he did not set out to provide a historical account even though his depictions of manners reveal the growing domination of money which was in the process of breaking down the frameworks and traditions of old society. Il est meilleur à mesure qu'il se rapproche du concret. Non qu'il recherche la singularité pour elle même : ce sont bien des passions communes et des types généraux qu'il vise mais toujours pris dans l'instant de leur manifestation et dans le cadre d'une société particulière : non l'homme abstrait mais le courtisan la grande dame le magistrat le financier le prédicateur du siècle de Louis xiv sur le commencement de son déclin.</em><br /><em>Il n'a certes pas songé à donner un témoignage historique quoiqu'on devine à travers ses tableaux de mœurs cette domination croissante de l'argent qui était en train de faire craquer les cadres et les traditions de l'ancienne société. Mais le réalisme concret et pourrait-on dire photographique de La Bruyère si bien servi par un style agile et incisif marque à lui seul une transition entre les grands classiques et le XVIIIe siècle : il nous mène finalement plus près de Montesquieu et de Voltaire que de Molière</em> ".<br /><br />Immense de marges hauteur 163 mm cet exemplaire réglé à l'état de neuf est conservé dans sa reliure en maroquin noir strictement d'époque teinte particulièrement rare et raffinée.</p><p>De la bibliothèque<em> Patrice Madden</em> avec ex-libris calligraphié.</p>
