Larkins signed verso front flyleaf in contemporary full carmel crushed moroccom covers with gilt rules back in six compartments with second and third containing title and publisher the other four with a central gilt flower bordered by ornate gilt wide ornate gilt dentelles all edges gilt marbled end papers. Near Fine the binding Fine internally foxed at plain paper end pages no foxing to China paper. Prior owner names in pencil front end page old bookseller's description pasted to verso front flyleaf with the number 12 in pencil below that. Die Ausgabe macht das Werk Les charactères de Théophraste traduits du Grec avec les caractères ou les moeurs de ce siècle des großen Moralisten erstmals seit vielen Jahren wieder zugänglich. Der Text folgt ""wesentlich"" der 1918 bei Georg Müller in München erschienen Übersetzung von Otto Flake. Nach juristischer Ausbildung und Jahren als Prinzenerzieher am Hof Ludwigs XIV. begann La Bruyère spät mit der Abfassung seines einzigen Werks. Ausgehend von seiner Übersetzung der Charaktere des Theophrast fand er sehr bald zu einem ganz eigenen Ansatz: In großer formaler Vielfalt - vom Charakterporträt hin zu Aphorismus und Kurzessay - richtet er seinen unbestechlichen Blick auf das Grundsätzliche der menschlichen Natur und sozialer Verhältnisse. La Bruyère den man auch den Soziologen unter den Moralisten genannt hat erschafft so eine >comédie humaine< des klassischen Jahrhunderts in Frankreich und wird zum Wegbereiter von Aufklärung und Revolution.
