Illustrated with 10 plates in black and white on coated paper. 8vo ‘Kipling’ dark green cloth with lettering and pictorial decorations of the famous sailing ship in gilt and black on the upper cover and spine t.e.g. 4 460 pp. A good copy with some typical wear from age and use the text-block clean and well preserved the binding with some light wear at the extremities some minor evidence of old damp to the outer edge of the upper cover rear hinge lightly shaken. FIRST EDITION PRECEDING THE BRITISH EDITION. A handsome copy of Kipling's picaresque novel of India generally considered his masterpiece and one of his most popular works.<br> Kipling was born in Bombay grew up in London and traveled throughout the world. “Widely regarded as unofficial poet laureate he refused many honours; in 1907 he was the first English writer to receive the Nobel Prize†Oxf Comp to Eng Lit. Kipling was popular with common soldiers and his phrase “the white man’s burden†influenced and was used to justify the period of neo-colonialism up until the second World War. While he was and remains a controversial figure his children’s books do not have this quality and are considered some of his greatest achievements. A little foxing to the endpapers and slightly to the first couple of leaves otherwise a very good fresh and clean copy throughout. Attractive previous owner engraved bookplate to the front pastedown endpaper. In the original publishers dark red cloth binding. Front board with circular gilt elephant device. Spine lettered in gilt. Top edge gilt. Very good sharp corners and the gilt still bright on the spine and front board.
