1891147351891. Allahabad: A.H. Wheeler & Co. 1891. 4 preliminary 5 pp undated ads. Original diagonally-divided red and blue cloth.<br/><br/> First Suppressed Edition. A.H. Wheeler publisher of the "Indian Railway Series" had been Kipling's authorized publisher in India. However after Kipling left India for England Wheeler promptly prepared for publication three more collections of Kipling pieces without authority: THE CITY OF DREADFUL NIGHT AND OTHER SKETCHES THE SMITH ADMINISTRATION and LETTERS OF MARQUE. Kipling insisted that all three editions be entirely destroyed and today there is only one known copy of the first title and only six known copies of the second title. But LETTERS OF MARQUE does turn up: although it was estimated that only about 100 out of 1000 printed copies escaped destruction the book today does not seem to be that scarce. This copy as with most known copies has a Wheeler price stamp on the front free endpaper plus a stamp showing this copy's date of dispatch from the publisher's premises 17 Nov '91 -- the book was published in October. The volume is in very good-plus condition with a bit of wear at one corner of the spine and the typical minor "lifting" of the cloth. For some reason this book almost always turns up in this approximate condition. Front wrap of 'The Story of the Gadsbys' is almost detached loss to most of the spine marking and rubbing to the wraps with a small chip to the front wrap. Light edge wear to the extremities of the wraps of each volume. Internally 'In Black and White' 'The Phantom Rickshaw' and 'The Story of the Gadsbys' are firmly bound and 'Soldiers Three' and 'Wee Willie Winkie' is generally firmly bond. Front and rear hinges tender and the binding cocked and with some cracking and tenderness at two gatherings. A little light marking and soiling to the half title and verso and to occasional leaf margins. Former owner armorial bookplate to the front pastedown that of noted electrical engineer Alexander Pelham Trotter. A fair to good copy of an uncommon item. 'The Second Jungle Book' 1895. 8vo. 238pp ii publisher's advertisements. With illustrations by J. Lockwood Kipling. Original publisher's navy blue cloth gilt lettered and decorated depicting a coiled cobra on the upper board plus a further gilt-stamped decoration to the backstrip. All edges gilt. Dear Morgan Crofton: We are in the last agonies of packing today but I hope to have the honour of calling on the general before 12: so Tomorrow. I am most sorry to have missed him this visit. Very sincerely yours Rudyard Kipling." Written to British Army officer Sir Morgan George Crofton during Kipling's first winter holiday in South Africa during which he was welcomed by a number of Cape Colony's leading politicians including the letter's recipient. Rudyard Kipling made his first holiday visit to Cape Town South Africa in early 1898 accompanied by his wife and two young children. Kipling had recently been awarded the title Poet of the Empire of Great Britain and was taking an increasingly political stance in his poetry as illustrated in his most recent poem "Recessional" composed for the occasion of Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee in 1897. He was warmly received in South Africa by some of the most influential politicians of the time whom he developed long-lasting friendships with and led to his interest in the British cause in the Boer War. unknown books

St. Petersburg 1897 107 pp. 22 x 15 cm.</p><p>Kipling is the most "Russian" of all Western writers of the 20th century not in terms of character or worldview but in terms of the intensity of his influence. No other country in the world loved The Jungle Book so much the best cartoon based on it was made in the USSR the best music for the radio play was written by Gubaidulina herself children of all Soviet generations played Mowgli Bagheera and Shere Khan and by the way we correctly adjusted the gender of Kipling's two main characters. The cat who walks by himself became a cat in our version and the fairy tale became more accurate funnier and more sarcastic and Bagheera who was also a brave young man in Kipling's version turned into a cunning queen of the jungle sometimes protecting Mowgli sometimes in love with him; a kind of Catherine with a young favorite. But most importantly Kipling became the foremost poet in Russia. At the same time he is rather marginal in England and even more so in the United States where incidentally his favorite was Eliot an avant-gardist and certainly not an imperialist; "A bad poet who writes excellent poems" he said of Kipling and this is a very accurate description.</p><p>Despite Kipling's popularity in the USSR translations of his works began long before the October Revolution and the establishment of Soviet power. The first translations appeared in 1896 and at the beginning of the 20th century several new translations were published each year. In 1916 an 11-volume collection of his works was released.</p><p>The book on offer Hindu Tales 1897 is one of the first translations of Kipling into Russian. It is in decent condition with a worn cover from the era and the stamp of a private collector.</p><p>WorldCat shows only two copies in libraries worldwide Berkeley and Yale.</p>
