From the series Biblioteka iunogo chitatelia The young reader's library. Translated by N. N. S. G. Zaimovskii and illustrated with drawings by N. Niko the most prolific Russian DP artist whose life and work remain almost completely undocumented. Early publication by the Posev publishing house which began its operation in 1945 at the DP camp of MÃ¶nchehof Germany. Posev was an anti-communist publishing house run by the National Alliance of Russian Solidarists NTS. Like his two Jungle Books Kipling wrote this morality tale of life aboard a New England fishing boat while living near Brattleboro Vermont his wife's hometown. The book thus contains "something of his feelings about America--both his affection and his irritation" Carpenter & Prichard 296. "This is the only book of Kipling's which is set entirely in America. All the characters are American. Not only that but the heart of the book--its moral in a single sentence--is one of Kipling's main beliefs of this period expressed in terms essentially American or perhaps more particularly New England. He put it later in verse: 'And the Gods of the Copy-book Maxims said: 'If you don't work you will die!' It is a saga of hard physical work in conflict with natural forces. A small note on Burwash Etchingham Bateman's stationery which is moderately toned. Dated Jan 9 1915 and written entirley in ink in Kipling's hand to his Doctor is an odd note that reads: "Dear Dr. Curteis. I shall be obliged if you will example examine for albumen sample of urine sent herewith let me have the result by this evening very sincerely signed Rudyard Kipling." Taped to the back of the frame is an original transmittal envelope upon which Kipling has written "Dr. Curteiss: Burwash." Dr. Arthur William Statter Curties in medical dictionary was referred by RK as Curteis and was his physician for many years. Not published Paperback books

Original publisher's navy cloth spine lettered in gilt pictorial jungle images based on artwork by the author's father John Lockwood Kipling stamped to the front board in gilt all edges gilt green coated endpapers. A good copy with wear moderate wear and rubbing to the spine spine ends frayed corners worn lean to spine; internally ownership blindstamp to first blank spine cracked at pages 128/129. Overall a good presentable copy in the original publisher's cloth. The Jungle Book is a collection of short stories and verses the most famous of which relate to the feral child protagonist Mowgli a "man cub." While they can be read independently of each other each chapter serves as a fable using animal figures to provide a moral lesson. In each volume the short stories are both preceded and followed by poems or songs including the notable "Mowgli's Song" and "The Law of the Jungle." The Jungle Books based on the author's childhood and later work experience in British India are indicative of Western Orientalist ideology at the turn of the 20th century which is somewhat softened by Kipling's fondness for his former home. Both Jungle Books are illustrated by the author's father John Lockwood Kipling who was a practicing illustrator and art professor in Bombay. . First Edition. Hard Cover. Good. 1927WRCLIT76860London: Macmillan and Co 1927. Twenty-six volumes of an eventual thirty-one. Large octavos. Holland backed blue boards printed spine labels t.e.g. others untrimmed. Some general slight tanning and shelfwear occasional inner hinges cracking or cracked occasional tan offsetting from endsheets to facing leaves several of the spare labels absent evidently utilized. Nonetheless a good reasonably sound set ideal for binding purposes. From an edition initially limited to 1050 copies of each through volume twenty and thereafter to five hundred copies of each volume printed on handmade paper and signed by Kipling in the first volume. There was a hiatus after the publication of the 26th volume in 1927 and the remaining five volumes finally appeared in 1938 resulting in a number of extant sets terminating with the final volume present here or with the 20th.
