A book that originated as a series of bedtime stories told by Kipling to his daughter Just So Stories contains chapters explaining the processes through which various animals came to look as they do including "How the Whale Got His Throat" and "How the Camel Got His Hump." First separate illustrated edition. Copy #5 of twenty copies with the limitation statement amended by Kipling and signed by him with the denotation in another hand reserving these copies "for Mr. Lewis Freeman" the photographer. The ordinary edition consisted of 377 signed copies. The publisher retained the twenty copies for distribution to different parties according to Freeman's wishes. Freeman enjoyed a distinguished career as explorer journalist and war correspondent and his photographs accompanying Kipling's poems cover a wide range of his travels and interests. First published in 1888 when Kipling was 23 and working in India for The Civil and Military Gazette Lahore these two volumes contain stories written for periodicals. They were published in the "India Railway Library" series No. 2 and No. 6. respectively by A.H. Wheeler at Allahabad and went into several editions. Kipling left India for London the following year. At the bottom of the first title is stamped "A.J. Combridge & Co. Bombay".<br/><br/>THE STORY OF THE GADSBYS conforms to the first issue of the front wrappers in two of the three relevant issue points the mountains appear to be retouched as per the second issue; however the heart shape in lower left corner not touching the border and absence of the "Mayo Art School Lahore" slug beneath the imprint are both points which conform to the first issue indicating a possible unrecorded intermediate issue see Richards p. 90.<br/><br/>WEE WILLIE WINKIE conforms to Stewart's description of the third Indian Edition made up of three thousand sheets printed for the first English edition. The book's forty-five poems and series of epitaphs is considered by some Kipling scholars as his darkest work. The trade edition was printed in an enormous run of 10000 copies and there were 200 copies on hand-made paper. This very limited issue of 30 copies on Japanese vellum is scarce in the market. This copy survived fire and water when so many of its fellows were destroyed by Nazi barbarism at Bodley House in October 1940. After being stored nearby and escaping more bombs it returned to the resurrected bookshop and now leaves Bodley House to find sanctuary in friendly hands in a luckier land. With all good wishes Bertram Rota June 6th 1941." Bertram Rota began selling books in 1923 and was essentially the first bookseller to specialize in modern first editions. In 1923 Rota moved operations to the former location of the Bodley Head publishing house on Vigo Street in London where in spite of sustaining a direct hit during a Nazi blitzkrieg the bookshop remained for twenty-eight years. An exceptional set of these classic children's books. The Jungle Book is a collection of fables which provide moral instruction by using animals anthropomorphically. Each story begins and ends with a verse and the original publications contain some illustrations created by Rudyard's father John Lockwood Kipling. The inspiration for the book is evident. Kipling was born in India and he spent his childhood there. Interestingly Kipling wrote these stories when he lived in Vermont. The Jungle Book is used to develop the morale of the junior element of the Scouting movement "The Cub Scouts". The name of the head wolf "Akela" has been traditionally given to each Cub Scout pack leader. At least fifteen movies were released based on Kipling's stories beginning with Elephant Boy in 1937. A live-action anticipated version of Jungle Book will be released in October of 2018 by Warner Brothers. Macmillan hardcover books
