They were published in the "India Railway Library" series No. 2 and No. 6. respectively by A.H. Wheeler at Allahabad and went into several editions. Kipling left India for London the following year. At the bottom of the first title is stamped "A.J. Combridge & Co. Bombay".<br/><br/>THE STORY OF THE GADSBYS conforms to the first issue of the front wrappers in two of the three relevant issue points the mountains appear to be retouched as per the second issue; however the heart shape in lower left corner not touching the border and absence of the "Mayo Art School Lahore" slug beneath the imprint are both points which conform to the first issue indicating a possible unrecorded intermediate issue see Richards p. 90.<br/><br/>WEE WILLIE WINKIE conforms to Stewart's description of the third Indian Edition made up of three thousand sheets printed for the first English edition. Kipling was born in India which inspired much of his work and his innovative stories for children have become timeless classics. Kipling was one of the most popular writers in the British Empire in both prose and verse in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and was awarded the Nobel Prize in literature in 1907. Cas. Moderate wear to the board edges and fading to the gold design on the front board and spine very good in good printed dust jacket repeating the floral art nouveau design in gold on the front and spine. Edge wear bumping and fading to gilt illustrations and lettering. Previous owner's name written on fpep and title page. Small bookplate of another previous owner to top outer corner of fpep. Light foxing to some pages. Boards are a bit of a darker blue than second book. Binding is sound. No markings beyond title page. SECOND JUNGLE BOOK: Gilt and cloth are very bright with far less wear than first book. Inscribed to previous owner dated Christmas 1895. Binding is very solid but endpapers have split at hinges. "Kipling thought he'd written a great story. He wrote to Conland Dr. James Conland the dedicatee after the book had begun to appear serially 'I tell you that tale will be a snorter'" Gidmark p. 71. The British edition was preceded by the American edition by one month. The work was originally serialized in Pearson's Magazine between 1896 and 1897. It was written while the newlywed Kipling was living in Vermont. Octavo 177 x 117 mm. Frontispiece 21 full-page illustrations by I. W. Taber. L. Kipling W.H. Drake and P. Frenzeny including tissue-guarded frontispiece to Volume I. With the original cloth spines front and rear panels bound in at the rear of each volume. In fine condition. An exceptional set of these classic children's books. The Jungle Book is a collection of fables which provide moral instruction by using animals anthropomorphically. Each story begins and ends with a verse and the original publications contain some illustrations created by Rudyard's father John Lockwood Kipling. The inspiration for the book is evident. Kipling was born in India and he spent his childhood there. Interestingly Kipling wrote these stories when he lived in Vermont. The Jungle Book is used to develop the morale of the junior element of the Scouting movement "The Cub Scouts". The name of the head wolf "Akela" has been traditionally given to each Cub Scout pack leader. At least fifteen movies were released based on Kipling's stories beginning with Elephant Boy in 1937. A live-action anticipated version of Jungle Book will be released in October of 2018 by Warner Brothers. Macmillan hardcover books

Rare in this near-fine condition First US edition first printing of the first trade book edition of Kipling's novel. This semi-autobiographical work deals with the theme of unrequited love; the elusive character Maisie is based on the Slade artist Flo Garrard who Kipling was unsuccessful in courting following the breakdown of his engagement to Caroline Taylor in 1890. The true first edition comprises a copyright edition which was filed for copyright in the US on 7 November 1890 and the serial rights were acquired by Lippincott's Monthly Magazine for its January 1891 issue appearing in Australia the UK and the US. On 12 November 1890 a copy of the present book the first US edition was deposited in the Library of Congress. It was not sold however until Lippincott's had been published. This edition prints the 12-chapter version with the "happy ending". Although Kipling originally wrote the novel with a "sad ending" the "happy ending" was the first to appear in print. The 14-chapter "sad ending" version in which the hero dies in battle was deposited in the Library of Congress on 26 November. Octavo. Original orange wrappers lettered and illustrated in black 22 vols in "Lovell's Westminster Series" listed on inside of rear wrapper. Housed in a custom red cloth chemise and red morocco-backed slipcase. A lovely mixed set of one of the cornerstone titles in children's literature and Kipling highlight and along with Just So Stories his most beloved work. First published in magazine format in 1893-4. British Nobel laureate Rudyard Kipling was born in India lived there & in England & wrote these stories when he lived in Vermont. The tales are fables using animals in an anthropomorphic manner to give moral lessons. The verses of The Law of the Jungle for example lay down rules for the safety of individuals families and communities. Kipling put in them nearly everything he knew or "heard or dreamed about the Indian jungle." Other readers have interpreted the work as allegories of the politics & society of the time. The best-known of them are the three stories revolving around the adventures of an abandoned "man cub" Mowgli who is raised by wolves in the Indian Jungle with the help of Baloo the bear and Bagheera the black panther & then has to fight the tiger Shere Khan. The most famous of the other stories are probably "Rikki-Tikki-Tavi" the story of a heroic mongoose and "Toomai of the Elephants" the tale of a young elephant-handler. "The White Seal" in which the main character seeks a haven for his people where they would be safe from hunters has been considered a metaphor for Zionism then in its beginning. As with much of Kipling's work each of the stories is preceded by a piece of verseand succeeded by another. MacMillan unknown
