First edition in the publisher's original paper wraps. Scarce.From the library of A. P. Watt & A. S. Watt of A. P. Watt and Son literary agent of Rudyard Kipling. Written by celebrated English novelist poet and short-story writer Rudyard Kipling known for his popular work 'The Jungle Book'. This collection of poetry was published in Chile with many of the poems written during Kipling's time working for the British War effort in the Boer War. Comprised of seven poems and two articles with two of the poems and both articles appearing here in book-form for the first time. This collection also includes letters from author Julian Ralph reporter Charles E. Hands and Douglas Story. This collection is suggested to be the only known case of a book being published in a country that was never visited by the author. The publisher Hume & Co. was said to be an huge admirer of Kipling's although overestimated the public demand meaning his print-run of 400 copies were largely left unsold or burnt. In the publisher's original paper wraps. Externally very smart with light offsetting and a little sunning. Small mark to the head of the rear wrap with slight markings from the staples externally and to endpapers. Internally firmly bound. Pages clean with slight age toning. Many pages have been left unopened. Very Good Indeed Hume & Co. paperback

Overall a good presentable copy in the original publisher's cloth. The Jungle Book is a collection of short stories and verses the most famous of which relate to the feral child protagonist Mowgli a "man cub." While they can be read independently of each other each chapter serves as a fable using animal figures to provide a moral lesson. In each volume the short stories are both preceded and followed by poems or songs including the notable "Mowgli's Song" and "The Law of the Jungle." The Jungle Books based on the author's childhood and later work experience in British India are indicative of Western Orientalist ideology at the turn of the 20th century which is somewhat softened by Kipling's fondness for his former home. Both Jungle Books are illustrated by the author's father John Lockwood Kipling who was a practicing illustrator and art professor in Bombay. . First Edition. Hard Cover. Good. Binding with some minor rubbing to extremities and minor smudging to the covers. A faint horizontal scratch to the front cover. Interior with a small closed tear to the bottom of the gutter at the interior front cover. Light spotting along the edge of the book block the front free endpapers and the bound in front wrapper. Binding and interior in very good condition overall. No.6 of the "Indian Railway Library" series by AH Wheeler & Co. These where originally sold at railway stations in India in softcover editions. St. Petersburg 1897 107 pp. 22 x 15 cm.</p><p>Kipling is the most "Russian" of all Western writers of the 20th century not in terms of character or worldview but in terms of the intensity of his influence. No other country in the world loved The Jungle Book so much the best cartoon based on it was made in the USSR the best music for the radio play was written by Gubaidulina herself children of all Soviet generations played Mowgli Bagheera and Shere Khan and by the way we correctly adjusted the gender of Kipling's two main characters. The cat who walks by himself became a cat in our version and the fairy tale became more accurate funnier and more sarcastic and Bagheera who was also a brave young man in Kipling's version turned into a cunning queen of the jungle sometimes protecting Mowgli sometimes in love with him; a kind of Catherine with a young favorite. But most importantly Kipling became the foremost poet in Russia. At the same time he is rather marginal in England and even more so in the United States where incidentally his favorite was Eliot an avant-gardist and certainly not an imperialist; "A bad poet who writes excellent poems" he said of Kipling and this is a very accurate description.</p><p>Despite Kipling's popularity in the USSR translations of his works began long before the October Revolution and the establishment of Soviet power. The first translations appeared in 1896 and at the beginning of the 20th century several new translations were published each year. In 1916 an 11-volume collection of his works was released.</p><p>The book on offer Hindu Tales 1897 is one of the first translations of Kipling into Russian. It is in decent condition with a worn cover from the era and the stamp of a private collector.</p><p>WorldCat shows only two copies in libraries worldwide Berkeley and Yale.</p>
