1897211
Kipling Rudyard. Hindu Tales In Black and White. Translated from English by V.N. Ofrosimov. St. Petersburg 1897 107 pp. 22 x 15 cm.

Kipling is the most "Russian" of all Western writers of the 20th century not in terms of character or worldview but in terms of the intensity of his influence. No other country in the world loved The Jungle Book so much the best cartoon based on it was made in the USSR the best music for the radio play was written by Gubaidulina herself children of all Soviet generations played Mowgli Bagheera and Shere Khan and by the way we correctly adjusted the gender of Kipling's two main characters. The cat who walks by himself became a cat in our version and the fairy tale became more accurate funnier and more sarcastic and Bagheera who was also a brave young man in Kipling's version turned into a cunning queen of the jungle sometimes protecting Mowgli sometimes in love with him; a kind of Catherine with a young favorite. But most importantly Kipling became the foremost poet in Russia. At the same time he is rather marginal in England and even more so in the United States where incidentally his favorite was Eliot an avant-gardist and certainly not an imperialist; "A bad poet who writes excellent poems" he said of Kipling and this is a very accurate description.

Despite Kipling's popularity in the USSR translations of his works began long before the October Revolution and the establishment of Soviet power. The first translations appeared in 1896 and at the beginning of the 20th century several new translations were published each year. In 1916 an 11-volume collection of his works was released.

The book on offer Hindu Tales 1897 is one of the first translations of Kipling into Russian. It is in decent condition with a worn cover from the era and the stamp of a private collector.

WorldCat shows only two copies in libraries worldwide Berkeley and Yale.

First edition first UK printing with contemporary insurance policy advertisement bookmark loosely inserted. An extensively researched work covering the movements and actions of the Irish Guards from their mobilisation the First Battalion on 4th August 1914 the Second from the 15th July 1915 through to Armistice day. The Irish Guards were one of the first regiments to be mobilised and they remained on the Western Front for the duration of the war. They took part in one of the bloodiest battles of 1914 the battle of Ypres as well as the Battle of the Somme and faced huge casualties throughout the duration of the war. Their motto Quis Separabit which appears on the covers of this work translated from the Latin as "Who shall separate us" and comes from the Order of St Patrick. Kipling had good reason to focus his attention on this particular regiment. Upon the outbreak of the First World War the author s only son John was keen to enlist and after failing a series of medical examinations due to poor eyesight it was his father who eventually succeeded in getting him a place being lifelong friends with Lord Roberts former commander-in-chief of the British Army and colonel of the Irish Guards. John joined the Irish Guards and at the battle of Loos was sent into fight two days into the battle in a reinforcement contingent. Missing in action he was presumed dead in service to his country and his body was not formerly identified until 1992. Kipling was devastated by his loss and consumed with guilt at his part in arranging his son s placement. He later wrote in Epitaphs of the War "If any question why we died / Tell them because our fathers lied." Recollection fades from men s minds as common as life closes over them Kipling writes here in his introduction. It is for the sake of these initiated that the compiler has loaded his records with detail and seeming triviality since in a life where Death ruled every hour nothing was trivial. A fascinating historical record scarce in the jackets and often regarded as one of the finest examples of regimental history. Collectible More images available on request. 1942WRCLIT77652Garden City: Doubleday Doran & Co. 1942. Cloth backed marbled boards t.e.g. Endsheets discolored from the binding glue utilized a few foxmarks at fore-edge else near fine. Second separate American printing following the 1934 U.S. copyright printing and the text's inclusion in the Sussex edition and the Burwash edition. This is one of only ten copies privately printed on handmade paper for presentation by the publisher. Kipling's text is preceded by a prefatory letter "My dear Mr. President:" outlining the background of the text by Alexander Woolcott signed in type noting "Nelson Doubleday has now put it into type for one of the many idle hours which must hang heavy on your hands these days." If the dedication to "Mr. President" suggests that this highly limited edition was undertaken in part for presentation to FDR the notion of FDR having "many idle hours" must be described as ironic. While not the first appearance of the text in book form it is much less common than the copyright printing 75 copies and as a production of Kipling's authorized U.S. publisher it must enjoy some bibliographic merit. Dear Morgan Crofton: We are in the last agonies of packing today but I hope to have the honour of calling on the general before 12: so Tomorrow. I am most sorry to have missed him this visit. Very sincerely yours Rudyard Kipling." Written to British Army officer Sir Morgan George Crofton during Kipling's first winter holiday in South Africa during which he was welcomed by a number of Cape Colony's leading politicians including the letter's recipient. Rudyard Kipling made his first holiday visit to Cape Town South Africa in early 1898 accompanied by his wife and two young children. Kipling had recently been awarded the title Poet of the Empire of Great Britain and was taking an increasingly political stance in his poetry as illustrated in his most recent poem "Recessional" composed for the occasion of Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee in 1897. He was warmly received in South Africa by some of the most influential politicians of the time whom he developed long-lasting friendships with and led to his interest in the British cause in the Boer War. unknown books

With illustrations by I. W. Taber. London: Macmillan and Co. Limited 1897.

First edition. Small octavo 7 1/4 x 4 3/4 inches; 184 x 121 mm. viii 245 1 blank 2 advertisements pp. With twenty-two full-page illustrations by I. W. Taber.

Publisher's blue cloth front cover and spine pictorially decorated in gilt dark gray coated endpapers all edges gilt. Minimal rubbing to extremities small bookseller's description neatly affixed to front paste-down. A touch of very light foxing otherwise a near fine copy the notoriously fragile endpapers remarkably fresh and intact.

One of Kipling's most enduring and widely read novels Captains Courageous stands apart within his canon as a pure sea story drawn from his own experiences aboard fishing vessels off the Grand Banks of Newfoundland. First published in 1897 it tells the story of Harvey Cheyne a spoiled American boy transformed by hardship discipline and camaraderie after being swept overboard and rescued by a Gloucester fishing schooner.

The novel's vivid depiction of life at sea - its dangers routines and moral code - owes much to Kipling's gift for observation and his admiration for working seamen. The result is a narrative at once adventurous and deeply humane often compared to the great maritime traditions of Dana and Melville but with a distinctly Kiplingesque emphasis on character and duty.

Isaiah West Taber 1830-1912 is a slightly deceptive figure in this context - he was not primarily a book illustrator but one of the leading American photographers of the late 19th century based in San Francisco. That explains why the plates in Captains Courageous feel unusually "real": they are derived from photographic studies not traditional drawn illustration.

The publisher's pictorial gilt cloth binding with its bold maritime design is particularly attractive and increasingly difficult to find in such well-preserved condition especially with the delicate coated endpapers intact and the gilt still bright.

A handsome and increasingly scarce first edition of one of the great literary evocations of the sea.
