In near fine condition with light rubbing to the extremities. Contemporary ownership inscription. Kipling's Jungle Books center on the story of Mowgli an orphaned 'man-cub' who is raised in the jungle of India by wolves where he comes to learn the Laws of the Jungle. A major theme throughout the books is abandonment followed by fostering as in the life of Mowgli echoing Kipling's own childhood. Another is law vs. freedom; the stories are not about animal behavior but about human archetypes in animal form. The books remain popular to this day and have been adapted several times for film and other media including the classic Walt Disney 1967 animation and its 2016 remake. ALS 2 pages on Kipling's stiff card letterhead which measures 4 ½ x 3 ½ inches Bateman's Burwash Sussex Aug. 1 1907 to Harry McClure Esq. with the original postmarked envelope

23442Upper left corner of card chipped otherwise the letter is in very good condition; the envelope shows signs of having been affixed to a page in a book. A short but interesting letter telling McClure that "Miss Reade came last week for lunch . . . she is a charming woman and we much enjoyed the glimpse of her." Kipling goes on: "Now it is up to you and your wife to come along. There are heaps of things in the land worth the looking at . . . We hope to get over to Canada this fall & through to Vancouver . . . I think there is a chance of setting eyes on you by the way. Ever yours sincerely & affectionately Rudyard Kipling." At the bottom of the letter there is a note from McClure presenting the letter to a woman on 1/26/26. Upper left corner of card chipped otherwise the letter is in very good condition; the envelope shows signs of having been affixed to a page in a book. unknown

Like his two Jungle Books Kipling wrote this morality tale of life aboard a New England fishing boat while living near Brattleboro Vermont his wifeâ€™s hometown. The book thus contains â€œsomething of his feelings about Americaâ€”both his affection and his irritationâ€ Carpenter & Prichard 296. â€œThis is the only book of Kiplingâ€™s which is set entirely in America. All the characters are American. Not only that but the heart of the bookâ€”its moral in a single sentenceâ€”is one of Kiplingâ€™s main beliefs of this period expressed in terms essentially American or perhaps more particularly New England. He put it later in verse: â€˜And the Gods of the Copy-book Maxims said: â€˜If you donâ€™t work you will die!â€™ It is a saga of hard physical work in conflict with natural forces.
