Henry James said: "Kipling strikes me personally as the most complete man of genius as distinct from fine intelligence that I have ever known." In 1907 he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature making him the first English-language writer to receive the prize and to date he remains its youngest recipient. Among other honours he was sounded out for the British Poet Laureateship and on several occasions for a knighthood all of which he declined. 1919149313London: His Majesty's Stationery Office 1919. Exceptionally rare first edition of this pamphlet honoring every British soldier who died in World War I. Oblong octavo original publisher's pictorial wrappers illustrated with black and white drawings of the cemeteries and memorials as they will appear completed throughout. In near fine condition. Illustrated by Mr. Douglas Macpherson. Housed in a custom red portfolio with gilt titles to the front panel and string ties. Rudyard Kipling’s The Graves of the Fallen 1919 written for the Imperial War Graves Commission articulates the moral and aesthetic vision behind the design and commemoration of British and Commonwealth soldiers’ graves after World War I. Serving as the Commission’s literary adviser Kipling helped shape its guiding principles of equality in death—ensuring that all soldiers regardless of rank or class were memorialized with identical headstones and inscriptions. The text blends solemn prose with restrained idealism reflecting both personal grief—Kipling’s son was killed in the war—and a collective commitment to remembrance. The complete set eventually included 36 volumes; however variations appeared in the printing over the years. Text published in two volumes in earlier printings was combined into single volumes to save money on the part of the publishers. The published letters of Rudyard Kipling 2004 indicate that Kipling often disapproved of the cost-saving measures of Scribner’s preferring that later printings kept the same numeration of the volumes as the earlier ones.
Size: 8vo. 19156
12mo. AEG. 276 pp. 4 pp. ads. Publisher's presentation blue cloth binding with illustrated dust jacket. The evidence indicates that this jacket and binding are original unused stock from the 1890s. During the 1900-20 period Macmillan offered four Kipling titles - The Jungle Book The Second Jungle Book Captains Courageous and Soldier Tales - in "special bindings for presentation" in addition to the standard red cloth trade editions. The bindings and jackets used for this special offering match the original bindings and jackets issued on those same four titles in the 1890s and at the same 6-shillings price on the jacket spines. If Macmillan had been issuing new bindings and jackets to replicate the 1890s style it probably would not have included Soldier Tales a very slow seller in such an offering. Nor were any popular post-1900 titles such as Kim or Puck of Pook's Hill included in this special offering - just the four titles that originally had the ornate blue bindings and illustrated jackets in the 1890s - thus the conclusion that Macmillan was using up leftover bindings and jackets. This copy slightly musty and cocked usual endpaper offsetting binding clean and unworn very good jacket with minor perimeter chips and tears but almost no loss a few bits of old tape on underside but clean complete and attractive. Kipling's classic children's story with a rare 1890s jacket of which only a handful survived on 1890s copies and with few if any surviving examples recorded on presentation copies - not seen by Richards for his 2010 Kipling bibliography. 1885BIBLIO-47698The "Civil and Military Gazette" Press Lahore first edition1885. Edition of 250 copies. Contemporary blind-patterned cloth original printed wrappers and advertisement leaves if any not retained 8vo. 125 pp. David Richards' authoritative bibliography notes that the advertisements present in many though not all copies do not form part of the book. Includes the first appearance of 'The Phantom Rickshaw'. Quartette was sold on the 19-year old Kipling's initiative as the 1885 Christmas supplement to the Civil & Military Gazette the Indian newspaper for which he was then journalist and general provider of material. It includes 16 works - eight in prose and eight poems - by Kipling himself and by his parents and sister the most notable being Rudyard's "The Strange Ride of Morrowbie Jukes C.E." and "The Phantom 'Rickshaw". Only 250 copies were printed and Kipling wrote amusingly to his cousin Margaret Burne-Jones about the chaotic circumstances of the production: copies were printed and bound up in the Civil & Military Gazette printing hall on overtime throughout the 'mad night' of 17-18 December 1885 with tots of brandy and plugs of free tobacco from Kipling 'twelve pounds of the hideous mixture of cow dung and dried grass they delight in' to encourage the 'forty odd men besides binders to keep Quartette going' ". Joints showing slight splitting though firm and sound some wear at spine-ends front endpapers replaced and with old tape-repair to first endpaper and minor loss to foot of gutter of second endpapers tanned textblock Good. 1518022154Naulakha Waite Vermont 15 June 1896. Framed Letter. Not examined out of frame. Appears Fine. Humorous handwritten one-page letter SIGNED "Rudyard Kipling" on his Naulakha Waite Vermont stationery to William Livingston Alden. In full: "Many thanks for your kind little note. It's a rummy land this side but there's a heap of material that I've got out of it. however i shall be clearing out in the Fall to get the taste out of my mouth. You see the devil of it is that a reporter once found out from a hired Swede girl that I occasionally sat down to dinner in that kind of rig which the downtrodden subjects of an effete monarchy call evening dress. Since then I have been considered with suspicion. But you'll see me come along in time back to civilization with a bicycle and a fishing-rod." Attractively and professionally matted and framed with a photographic reproduction of Kipling to an overall size of 15-1/2" x 13." Alden was an American journalist humorist and writer of fiction. He had been Consul General in Rome 1885-89 and from 1892 until his death in 1908 he lived in London where he was a regular contributor to magazines. The letterhead is of interest as in 1895 the U. S. Postmaster General authorized a special post office since Kipling received more mail than the largest business in the area. Waite Vermont existed solely in the home of and was named for the Kiplings' neighbor Anna F. Waite who was appointed Postmistress. The Kiplings left Vermont not long after this letter was written never to return Waite Vermont ceased to exist the following year. Today philatelists prize the Waite postmark being the only post office ever created for an individual. Kipling wrote THE JUNGLE BOOK and CAPTAINS COURAGEOUS in Vermont. It is said that Kipling's Naulakha is where skiing was introduced to Vermont and the site of the state's first tennis court.

unknown
