1897211
Kipling Rudyard. Hindu Tales In Black and White. Translated from English by V.N. Ofrosimov. St. Petersburg 1897 107 pp. 22 x 15 cm.

Kipling is the most "Russian" of all Western writers of the 20th century not in terms of character or worldview but in terms of the intensity of his influence. No other country in the world loved The Jungle Book so much the best cartoon based on it was made in the USSR the best music for the radio play was written by Gubaidulina herself children of all Soviet generations played Mowgli Bagheera and Shere Khan and by the way we correctly adjusted the gender of Kipling's two main characters. The cat who walks by himself became a cat in our version and the fairy tale became more accurate funnier and more sarcastic and Bagheera who was also a brave young man in Kipling's version turned into a cunning queen of the jungle sometimes protecting Mowgli sometimes in love with him; a kind of Catherine with a young favorite. But most importantly Kipling became the foremost poet in Russia. At the same time he is rather marginal in England and even more so in the United States where incidentally his favorite was Eliot an avant-gardist and certainly not an imperialist; "A bad poet who writes excellent poems" he said of Kipling and this is a very accurate description.

Despite Kipling's popularity in the USSR translations of his works began long before the October Revolution and the establishment of Soviet power. The first translations appeared in 1896 and at the beginning of the 20th century several new translations were published each year. In 1916 an 11-volume collection of his works was released.

The book on offer Hindu Tales 1897 is one of the first translations of Kipling into Russian. It is in decent condition with a worn cover from the era and the stamp of a private collector.

WorldCat shows only two copies in libraries worldwide Berkeley and Yale.

1899583068London: Enoch & Sons / The Daily Mail 1899. Softcover. Very Good. First edition. Folio. 9pp. Wrappers. Notched along the spine with the pages numbered in ink by hand from once being bound within an album music shop stamp on the front wrapper rubbing to the exterior still a very good and complete copy. For voice and piano. Plate imprint "E & S 2703." "For every copy sold of this song one shilling goes to The Daily Mail fund for the relief of the sufferers by the war" from the front cover. This charitable effort by The Daily Mail to raise money for soldiers and their families during the Second Boer War was reportedly the first of its kind. Kipling wrote the lyrics specifically to be used in this fashion and is quoted as saying "It's catchpenny verse and I want it to catch just as many pennies as it can" going on to remark that it is not something he would ever care to reprint "so there is no need of copyrighting it in America. If anyone wants to sing it take care that the proceeds go to our men" Victoria and Albert Museum. The song was an enormous hit and though the exact amount raised is unknown it certainly succeeded in catching a lot of pennies. Enoch & Sons / The Daily Mail unknown

1899527870New York: Boosey & Co 1899. Softcover. Fair. Later printing possibly the first American edition. Folio. Two nested bifolia with a single sheet insert making ten pages. Outer bifolium separated along the fold but both leaves are present inner bifolium nearly separated edgewear owner name on the front cover and toning and soiling to the exterior a complete but fair only copy. Plate imprint "E. 7 - 7." This song was originally published in London in 1899 by The Daily Mail to raise money for soldiers and their families during the Second Boer War. The original front cover printed the statement "For every copy sold of this song one shilling goes to The Daily Mail fund for the relief of the sufferers by the war." This charitable effort was reportedly the first of its kind. The song was an enormous hit and though the exact amount raised is unknown it certainly succeeded in catching a lot of pennies; what is not certain is whether or not Boosey & Co. took care to contribute part of their proceeds from this American publication as nothing is printed indicating that they did. An interesting reprint that appears to be a bit more uncommon than the original. Boosey & Co unknown

An opponent of female suffrage and a staunch supporter of British imperialism Kipling nonetheless had great sympathy for the traditions of India as well as the literary ability and desire to present it as a land of beauty and enchantment. He was born in Bombay where his father ran a school of art and he lived in India until the age of six. He was sent to school in England but chose to return to the East at 18. His father had become director of the Lahore Museum in what is now Pakistan and Rudyard became a journalist for the "Lahore Civil and Military Gazette." His first two collections of stories "Plain Tales from the Hills" and "Soldiers Three" depict the lives of the British military in India; he proved to be a prolific author writing novels tales for children and adults and many poems. Kipling's wife was American and they lived for a time in Vermont but from 1896 the couple settled in England. Among his many honors are a Nobel Prize 1907 and the Gold Medal of the Royal Society of Literature 1926 which had previously only been awarded to Scott Meredith and Hardy. Macmillan and Co unknown
