A well-preserved first edition of this account of the Royal Navy at sea by Rudyard Kipling. Most renowned for 'The Jungle Book' 'Kim' and 'Just so Stories' Rudyard Kipling 1865-1936 is seen as a pioneer for the short story form and a classic author of children's fiction. He was born in India the inspiration behind a vast amount of his writings which include 'The Jungle Book' 'Just So Stories' and 'Kim'. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1907 becoming the youngest ever recipient and first English language writer to do so.'A Fleet in Being' is a series of military articles on the subject of the Royal Navy in 1898.In the publisher's original paper wrap bindings with a pictorial cover. In paper wraps. Externally generally smart a touch of discolouration to the front board and spine with some loss to the paper of the tail of the spine and a chip to the head. The first edition of this work.Rudyard Kipling's series of articles about the British Channel Fleet written as he as involved in the debate about Britain's response to the rise of Germany's naval power.Kipling is best known for his novel 'The Jungle Book' however he was a prolific writer of poems novels and short stories. Being born in India inspired much of his work and he went on to become one of the most popular writers of his time. The original blue front wrap is bound in.Prior owner's ink inscription to the front wrap 'M. E. Coulson'. Rebound is a full cloth binding with the front wrap bound in. Externally the boards are a little discoloured. A few minor marks to the boards and spine. Light bumping to the head and tail fo the spine and to the extremities. Light spots to the fore edge. Quarter red cloth with marbled boards rubbing to board edges light wear to corners. Light foxing to endpapers previous owner's name to front pastedown endpaper. Some light patches of foxing to text outside margin of two pages in Soldiers Three have slight damage from a label appears to be an original binding flaw. Original wraps priced at 1 Rupee are bound in with all issues and have varying degrees of damage - most have small sections of loss to edges and/or corners rear cover of Soldiers Three has a large section of loss rear cover of Wee Willie Winkie has a hole to the centre. All issues are the fourth Indian edition published in 1890 this includes Soldiers Three despite it stating Second Indian Edition to the title page. This edition used the same sheets as the first English Edition pagination is the same as the English edition but some of the ads are omitted. Each of these titles had a total Indian issue of 3000 copies. Roberts notes that the fourth Indian edition did not sell well and some copies are known to be stamped to the cover margin in purple ink: 'To still further popularize this Celebrated Series the price is reduced to Eight Annas per volume.' This is stamp is present to front wrappers of all issues in this collection. A rare group of Indian editions including the sought after 'Phantom Rickshaw' a collection of supernatural tales. Overall condition is Very Good Minus. Size: 5.5 x 8.5 inches 14 x 21.5 cm. A.H. Wheeler & Co. hardcover
