Kipling's stories previously appeared in various magazines from 1893 to 1894. Livingston 104; Richards A76</p><p><strong>Condition and Description</strong>: Small octavos blue cloth stamped in gilt all edges gilt dark blue coated endpapers. 212 pp. Vol. 1. 238 pp. 2 pp. ads Vol. 2. Complete with all pages present. Both volumes contain extensive illustrations by J. L. Kipling as well as W. H. Drake and P. Frenzeny. Only the first volume contains a frontispiece the second was issued without one. Gilt bright on both volumes especially the second with trace rubbing to the first. Minor wear to the boards. The price of the book at publication "6/-" is penciled on the verso of the front free endpapers. The first volume has a contemporary blind debossed stamp of a British retailer to the front free endpaper "W.H. Smith & Son / London". No other prior owner markings. Tight hinges in both books with no trace of the seemingly ubiquitous separation. Additional condition details for each volume are as follows. Vol. 1: Mild spine lean. Secure binding though with a few gutters exposed most significantly at p. 33 with a handful of minor instances elsewhere. Gutter at p. 212 discreetly and reversibly strengthened. Faint stain to the bottom right corner of the first blank leaf extending to just before the first page of text. Vol. 2: Securely bound. Scattered instances of foxing but most pages are clear. Additional pictures available upon request. Light foxing to some pages. Boards are a bit of a darker blue than second book. Binding is sound. No markings beyond title page. SECOND JUNGLE BOOK: Gilt and cloth are very bright with far less wear than first book. Inscribed to previous owner dated Christmas 1895. Binding is very solid but endpapers have split at hinges. Original publisher's navy blue cloth gilt lettered and decorated depicting three elephants with riders and a herder on the upper board plus additional decorations to the backstrip these last a little faded. All edges gilt. Frontispiece tissue a little browned. The cloth nicked and worn at the backstrip ends the corner tips rubbed and with a little wear to the gutters. Front and rear hinges tender and the binding cocked and with some cracking and tenderness at two gatherings. A little light marking and soiling to the half title and verso and to occasional leaf margins. Former owner armorial bookplate to the front pastedown that of noted electrical engineer Alexander Pelham Trotter. A fair to good copy of an uncommon item. 'The Second Jungle Book' 1895. 8vo. 238pp ii publisher's advertisements. With illustrations by J. Lockwood Kipling. Original publisher's navy blue cloth gilt lettered and decorated depicting a coiled cobra on the upper board plus a further gilt-stamped decoration to the backstrip. All edges gilt. The cloth lightly faded at the backstrip and with a little wear to the spine ends and corner tips. A slight ridge to the spine and the binding just a little cocked. Some moderate fox spotting. Original publisher's navy cloth spine lettered in gilt pictorial jungle images based on artwork by the author's father John Lockwood Kipling stamped to the front board in gilt all edges gilt green coated endpapers. A good copy with wear moderate wear and rubbing to the spine spine ends frayed corners worn lean to spine; internally ownership blindstamp to first blank spine cracked at pages 128/129. Overall a good presentable copy in the original publisher's cloth. The Jungle Book is a collection of short stories and verses the most famous of which relate to the feral child protagonist Mowgli a "man cub." While they can be read independently of each other each chapter serves as a fable using animal figures to provide a moral lesson. In each volume the short stories are both preceded and followed by poems or songs including the notable "Mowgli's Song" and "The Law of the Jungle." The Jungle Books based on the author's childhood and later work experience in British India are indicative of Western Orientalist ideology at the turn of the 20th century which is somewhat softened by Kipling's fondness for his former home. The name of the head wolf "Akela" has been traditionally given to each Cub Scout pack leader. At least fifteen movies were released based on Kipling's stories beginning with Elephant Boy in 1937.
