Nobody who has travelled even up and down the line from the colony to Pretoria can fail to see the enormous amount of work that there is to be done and of course away from the line that work is even more urgent." 1 side A4 Bateman's Burwash 6th June unknown
1909157971909. One page on Kipling's "Bateman's Burwash Sussex" stationery. 14th Aug. 1909.

This letter addressed to "Dear Sir" but with the recipient's name and address "9 King's Cross Road W.C." typed below reads: I have received your letter of the 12th together with the file of correspondence which I return herewith. I am only sorry that as I know nothing about the business side of inventions it is out of my power to assist you. Yours truly signed: Rudyard Kipling. We do not know who John Proctor was; nor did Kipling -- but Proctor had apparently sent a whole file regarding some invention he was working on. Perhaps he contacted Kipling because he knew the famous author had written an 1893 book titled MANY INVENTIONS The letter is in very good condition a couple of small holes and tape-marks not affecting print. Basic content but a fine example of Kipling's signature. unknown

1913016764London: Macmillan 1913. 5th or later Edition . Hardcover. Good. Reprint. Hardback original red cloth binding gilt titling to spine and gilt elephant roundel to upper board. Top edge gilt. 20.5 × 13cm 407pp 1. This copy has a quite remarkable maritime history. It was owned by architect Arthur J. Davis with his bookplate to the front pastedown and the rear endpapers contain two architectural pencil plans/sketches believed to relate to the smoking rooms of RMS Aquitania. The left-hand drawing is more detailed and appears to show the funnel casing at the base of the plan with a swirl in the middle suggesting the outline of a skylight; the tapering of the deck plan is consistent with the aft position of the smoking room. The right-hand drawing is a similar plan possibly representing a secondary smoking room. The presence of Davis's bookplate together with the subject matter of the sketches and his documented role in designing the public interiors of Aquitania during this period strongly suggests these drawings were executed by Davis in association with his own copy of the book. Arthur Joseph Davis 1878-1951 was an English architect trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and co-founder of the firm Mewès & Davis responsible for the interior design of the London Ritz Hotel notable country houses and the public rooms of RMS Aquitania in 1911-1914 - a period that coincides with the date of this book 1913. While no external authentication is offered the attribution is made in good faith on the basis of ownership evidence and contextual consistency. Kipling's selection of short stories first published in 1891 set in colonial India. Most had previously been published in periodicals. Condition: The pencil sketches are in good condition there is a little offsetting from each when the books has been closed and they've faced each other and some light age-toning to the endpapers. The red cloth is good but a little darkened and there is light scattered foxing to the pages throughout. However the bookplate and sketches make this a unique item of Aquitania history.

Macmillan hardcover
1935712001935. KIPLING Rudyard. Two Forewords. Original cloth-backed marbled boards. Garden City NY: Doubleday Doran & Co. 1935. First edition. Stewart A623. One of 950 copies. Small bookplate else fine. unknown
1935004250Garden City New York: Doubleday Doran & Co. Ltd. 1935. First edition. Hardcover. This first and limited edition collects two letters written by Kipling to his American publishers Frank Nelson Doubleday and his son Nelson Doubleday. The first letter was written to Nelson and used as the Foreword to A Kipling Pageant in 1935. The second letter was written to Frank and used as the Introduction to the Outward Bound Edition of Kipling's works published by Scribners in 1897 and arranged through the efforts of Frank Doubleday. The edition was limited to 950 copies each bound in marbled paper-covered boards with gilt-stamped black cloth spine the volume housed in a notched red cardboard slipcase.

This near-fine unread copy retains the original slipcase which is damaged and worn. The binding is square and tight with sharp corners and bright spine gilt. Neither the boards nor cloth spine show any appreciable wear. The signatures remain uncut so the copy is demonstrably unread. There are no previous ownership marks. What prevents our grading this volume as fine is spotting moderate to the first and final few leaves and thereafter primarily confined to the untrimmed fore edges. The accompanying slipcase has done its job protecting the book and remains in one piece but shows definite wear with some loss to the top and bottom edges to a maximum depth of one inch. Most of the seams show wear with the beginnings of splits evident in places.

This book came to us from the library of Nelson Doubleday Jr. son of Nelson Doubleday and grandson of Frank Nelson Doubleday Kiplings friend and U.S. publisher and founder of the Doubleday publishing empire. F.N. Doubleday began work in the publishing industry working for Charles Scribners Sons. His 18-year career with Scribners included the task of assembling a complete set of Kipling's works for publication in a collected edition in 1897 the aforementioned Outward Bound Edition. His work with Kipling on this endeavor sparked a friendship and partnership that lasted for decades. Kipling affectionately gave Doubleday the nickname "Effendi" a play on the initials of his name - F.N.D. Frank's son Nelson was president of the firm from 1922 to 1946 as was Nelson Jr. from 1978 to 1983.

Iconic English poet short-story writer and novelist Joseph Rudyard Kipling 1865-1936 is chiefly remembered for his celebration of British imperialism tales and poems of British soldiers in India and his tales for children. Despite this reputation Kiplings extraordinary body of work eludes all labels in its range and variety Kipling's work is not only of the highest artistic excellence it is deeply humane and fully expresses the sense of one of his favourite texts: Praised be Allah for the diversity of his creatures. ODNB Kipling was in his twenties when his stories of Anglo-Indian life made him a literary celebrity and he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1907. Kipling remains the youngest person to receive the Prize and was also the first English language author awarded.

Reference: Richards A428

Doubleday, Doran & Co., Ltd. hardcover
