189719555EMaidencombe: 4 1/2†x 7†May 4 1897. Original autograph letter signed by the author Rudyard Kipling on printed stationery from Rock House Maidencombe St. Marychurch where he and his wife lived between 1896 and 1898. The letter reads in full: “Dear Watson Many thanks for your note and the contract which certainly opens a new and safe method of burglary. I always said that the Oriental thief can give his white brothers many points in the game. The necklace he chose was amethyst & pearl - not emerald & pearl - and it is a beauty. I should very much like to be able to afford a white pearl necklace. Do you suppose the price would be very heavy I should like to have an idea on this subject. Bombay must have been a ghastly place this winter. My sister’s letters gave me some of the news as she learned it and it seems to have been fearful. Always sincerely yours Rudyard.†Near fine with a hint of use and a single crease from folding. 4 1/2†x 7†unknown books

W. rated 5. it was amazing · review of another edition
Shelves: british-authors classics literary-fiction short-stories
Kipling is of his time this must not be forgotten it's unfortunate that I feel I must say this as the current climate for such classics is tenuous. Each tale has its special cadence that is from a time and place that is exotic in one sense but yet not people are people no matter where they are it's the human condition inter-racial love soldier's on the verge of mutiny kings laborers life and death. I have loved Kiplings work since I was a little girl when we read "Rikki-Tikki Tavi" and "The Elephant's Child" and of course "The Jungle Book" I grew up with the Disney film but read the book later and loved it more. My copy is an old one a beautiful white and blue cloth cover with stamped gold leaf filigree and letters it's quite beautiful as an object in pristine condition for its age inscribed in faded black ink on the inside with a previous owners name and dated 1901. It caught my eye at my favorite antique shop the Antique Pavilion in Bouckeville NY and I am happy add it to my collection of vintage books. R. F. Fenno & Company hardcover

189105445MINE OWN PEOPLE Lovell Coryell 1891 first American edition a vg copy with a long introduction by Henry James. Among the first of the authors books to be published in the U.S. While this copy does indeed have a Table of Contents page that is placed after the printed facsimile letter in Kipling's hand and a title page as Lovell Coryell & Co. along with their address and no date printed at the base of same and furthermore has a binding where the base of the cloth spine is blank that is not stamped with any publisher information all which seem to be indices that suggest that this is a later issue this copy not only has a printed page following the half-title page which reads in total "This edition of my collected writings is issued in America with my cordial sanction / Rudyard Kipling / London March 1891" but also has the portrait frontispiece which is said NOT to be part of the Lovell and Coryell issue !!! Also it is not quite clear as to why the Lovell and Coryell issue does not "precede" the United States Book Company issue if in fact the United States Book Company is the successor "to" the John W. Lovell Company. Lovell, Coryell hardcover
