The articles were prompted by the British Ambassador to Rome asking Kipling to visit and write about the Italian front in the First World War finding it "maddening" that the British seemed to think that Italy was "not pulling her weight". The articles are: The Roads of an Army; Podgora; A Pass a King and a Mountain; Only a few steps higher up; and The Trentino Front. The Kipling Society website records that "anecdotal evidence claims that an Alpini general described it as one of the best accounts of alpine warfare ever written".
