Questo saggio indaga alcuni aspetti della psicoanalisi attraverso l'esame critico di testi letterari esemplari. Grazie a un racconto di Mark Twain citato da Freud, che tratta del furto di un cocomero, viene messo a confronto il concetto di Super - Io freudiano e quello di coscienza morale in Jung: lo scopo è quello di dimostrare come la psicoanalisi e la psicologia analitica abbiano prodotto due distinte concezioni etiche e, di conseguenza, due idee differenti di psicoterapia. Nella seconda parte, la stessa indagine viene condotta su indimenticabili personaggi della letteratura e viene approfondito il tema del conflitto affettivo tra uomo e donna e tra genitori e figli.
