Bound in gray cloth with blue spine lettering the book itself is clean and unmarked internally with moderate toning to the pages. However the jacket shows significant wear: in addition to missing one-fourth of the top front cover there's chipping edge loss and internal tape repairs. Still the front cover retains the striking star-and-stripes design the spine title is clear and the jacket is kept intact and protected in a clear Mylar cover. Translated by Klaus Mann with a preface by Edwin Muir and an afterword by Max Brod. An important political satire from the great Czech writer published during the Kafka renaissance under the New Classics imprint. New Directions hardcover

They were both patients treated for lung tuberculosis. They became close friends and their mutual correspondence shows their real friendship.
