1992WRCLIT81038Princeton 1992. 11 pages 16mo 12mo octavo and quarto. Very good or better. Oates writes to novelist Kit Reed responding to her request in her capacity organizing a fund-raiser for the National Book Critics Circle - a sale of signed items or manuscripts from member writers - "Though knowing myself no favorite of the NCBB not one mention for any title over the years! I'd be happy if just a little embarrassed to help with your project." She follows up: "After I wrote to you I realized that my mss. are supposed to go to my 'archive' at Syracuse University. But I am sure these messy embarrassing work-sheets would not be missed. If you can use them fine. If not - - not." She explains that she uses scrap paper in this case "someone else's photocopied mss. that came to the house for perhaps a blurb . The more I consider this the less I want to send it or anything off. The wastebasket seems the kindest receptacle! Warm regards Joyce." In August Oates supplied a signed explanatory adhesive note to accompany the work sheets" "These are work sheets for BLACK WATER 1992. Joyce Carol Oates. 15 Aug. 1992 scrap paper on reverse; not my ms and I don't know whose." The worksheets are non- contiguous have only a handful of manuscript notes and include one substantial revised passage half a page loosely taped over the original text. unknown books

191742107New York City: Margaret C. Anderson 1917. First Edition. Slim octavo 24.5cm; original beige stapled wrappers with title label mounted to front cover; 30pp. Mild tanning to text edges with several small nicks and short tears to wrapper extremities; Very Good complete copy. Contents include poetry and short works by Amy Lowell Richard Aldington and Margaret Anderson. Contains a paragraph dedicated to Joyce's A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man: "There isn't time for me to write about James Joyce's The Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man in this issue. It came too late from the publisher. So far as I have seen the whole comment of the reviewers has been on the background for the portrait: "the social political and religious life of Ireland today" etc. But there is the portrait itself - bearing a slight resemblance to the Playboy a strong sensitive romancer; and the painting of the portrait - spontaneous masterly free: the color like this: "The spell of arms and voices: the white arms of roads their promise of close embraces and the black arms of tall ships that stand against the moon their tale of distant nations." Next time I shall have something more to tell of Joyce - something thrilling and personal" p.17. An interesting snippet of text foretelling Anderson's serialization of Ulysses in The Little Review between 1918-1920. Rear wrapper bears a full-page ad by B.W. Huebsch for Joyce's A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man and Dubliners. Margaret C. Anderson unknown books

19574587New York: New Directions 1957. First Edition thus. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. First Edition thus with introduction by Edel. Very good copy in a very good dust jacket. Perhaps too much has been made of this book being Joyce's inspiration for his stream-of-consciousness method but Dujardin's minor place as a point of interest to Joyce scholars is nevertheless secure. Joyce first read the book in French in 1902; it was republished in 1924 soon after Joyce acknowledged its importance to him. This copy has been inscribed by Leon Edel who has provided an introduction for this edition: "Fredrica Laudon with fond memories of our talks last summer in Edgarton and the affectionate regards of Leon Edel. New York 1958."

New Directions hardcover books
