1961683491961. Baltimore The William and Wilkins Company 1961 8° 80 pp. 18 Reels 1 Sawyers View Master Compact Vieter orig. cloth. First Edition! Dr John J. Joyce III of the Department of Orthopaedics and Dr. Michael Hartv of the Department of Anatomy in the Graduate School of Medicine of the University of Pennsylvania have been teaching graduate students Orthopaedic Surgery for ten years. Through their experience in coordinating surgery and anatomy they have produced a fresh concept of an atlas on surgical approaches. Their spirit of teaching represents that which has prevailed in the Graduate School of Medicine since its organization by Dr. George H. Meeker in 1916. At that time the era of medical specialization was in its inception. This usually meant that a group of physicians spent a few months observing the professor in the surgical amphitheater. The "students" were then awarded certificates designating them as "specialists." Because he appreciated the rapid progress that was being made in medicine Dr. Meeker felt that instruction in the basic sciences was essential to specialization. Hence for over forty years anatomy physiology biochemistry bacteriology and pathology have occupied at least half of the graduate medical students' curriculum at the University of Pennsylvania. In addition to anatomical dissection the courses in surgical specialties include a course in operative surgery on the cadaver. In this book Dr. Joyce and Dr. Harty demonstrate the vital relationship between anatomy and surgical approaches. Their work is not just another atlas. It is not just a set of stereopticon pictures for arm chair study. The authors have diligently selected fresh speciemens for dissection. This has enhanced the realism of their color picture photographs of the specimens with small identifying labels attached to the anatomical structures facilitates the immediate orientation of the person viewing the pictures. The necessity of putting down a viewer to decode numbers or letters in a manual is thereby obviated. Finally the pictures are easily projected and can be viewed by a group. The book is a definite asset to everyone interested in practicing orthopaedic surgery." Foreword Jeese T. Nicholson Rare! hardcover

1945D7489likely Germany 1945. Paperback. Very Good. Heavy cardstock leaves oblong 325 x 250 mm bound with thin blue rope tassled along spine; pp. 54 with text handwritten in black ink in German and English with original illustrations in ink or ink and gouache both in text and full-page. Created from 32 leaves some of them glued together along the edges creating a new page when the author/illustrator wanted to change her lay-out text or illustration -- these have since become detached offering an interesting look at the author's creative process. Binding broken and leaves loose but in excellent condition suitable for display. The artwork is extraordinary -- showing cute little chicks as their adventure takes them from fields full of flowers to lakes brimming with colorful fish. It tells a story of 3 little chicks who find a mysterious blue egg which they are told not to play with but they do and learn some valuable lessons from the consequences. Though little is known about the author she appears in a tiny b/w photograph on the ultimate full-page illustration. More of her unrelated artwork is laid-in at rear including pastels of trees floral arrangements in gouache -- lovely suitable for framing.

paperback
