Slight glue residue on the front flyleaf from removed bookplate. Small stain on the fore edge of the text block. Pages bright and clean. Binding strong and square. The original self-published cookbook that was to become an evergreen classic of Chinese-American cooking a book which perhaps did more to introduce Chinese home cooking to Americans than any other before. Cambridge-based Joyce Chen 1917-1994 was a chef author television personality and enterpreneur. She had several acclaimed restaurants in Cambridge. Chef Ming Tsai called Chen the Chinese Julia Child . Joyce Chen helped elevate what Chinese food was about. She didn't dumb it down. She opened people's eyes to what good Chinese could taste like." Laid-in are five related items including a four-page "Christmas Thoughts" an insert printed a year later for the 1963 holiday season; a four-page Mail Order Catalog with envelope and a typed letter signed introducing a special pastry service at Chen's restaurants. Interior is clean and sound. In original pictorial boards printed in brown and grayish blue. No dust jacket as issued; later printings of this edition were issued in tan cloth and a dust jacket that mimics the design on the original boards. Fine. It is 18 x 24 inches and nicely farmed 26 x 32 inches. Signed by Joyce Clark on the lower right titled and signed by her on the rear signed twice more by her under her copyright stamp. Wonderful condition."Joyce Clark was raised in the famous Art Colony of Laguna Beach California.Ê In 1970 she moved to the island of Maui where she lived and painted for 25 years; 10 of those years in the beautiful countryside of Hana Maui known as "the last Hawaiian place." She now makes her home in Sunriver Oregon. Following her formal education at Whittier College and University of California at Los Angeles she spent many years as a commercial artist and a ceramic decorator before becoming deeply involved in oil painting and mosaic murals. Joyce has been commissioned to paint numerous oil paintings for private collections around the world as well as to create mosaics that grace the walls of many public structures. Among these murals are the 12'x16' mosaic "St. Francis of Assissi" that is on the St Francis Hospital in Lynwood; California' "Future in Space" a mural in Tulare High School Tulare California; four mosaic murals in the Congregational Church in Laguna Beach California; four Cortese Crest murals in Leisure World in Laguna Hills California and a mosaic cross in the "Church of the Community" in Honokowai Maui Hawaii" Village Galleries.
