Eileen Alannah JOYCE 1908–1991 Australian pianist born in Zeehan Tasmania in 1908. The family moved to Boulder Western Australia in 1911 where her father was employed as a miner. Joyce left Australia in December 1926 for Leipzig Germany to study music under the pianist Max Pauer moving to London in 1930. Shortly after the resourceful young pianist made a recording in London at her own expense and sent copies to the leading conductors of the day. Offers of engagements with top orchestras followed. In 1936 she made her first ABC tour of Australia. Joyce's last trip home to Australia was in 1989 when she attended an ABC concert in her honour at Sydney Town Hall. Angus MCBEAN 1904-1990 London photographer born in Wales in 1904 moved with his family to London in 1930 where he worked as a photographer set designer later becoming a cult figure associated with surrealism. In the 1950's he worked with the recording company E.M.I. where he was commissioned to create Cliff Richard's first four album covers. McBean's later works included photography for the cover of The Beatles' first album Angus McBean, Photographer unknown

Included are a Foreword Introduction Technical Notes Glossary Bibliography and Resources. This book on gold leafing is self-referencing as it is in a spectacular blind tooled and gold leafed binding by Talin Bindery. The binding is unique and the bindery is no longer doing work of this type. Finely bound in green Morocco leather over boards with 4 raised bands and 5 compartments. The binding is hand tooled in gilt blind with a central device in horizontal framing and divided into quadrants. The front and back have identical designs with the front bearing title subtitle and author in blind. The compartments have floriform devices in gilt blind. The pastedowns and endpapers are marbled in-house by Talin and the variegated greens compliment the binding. Binder's tag at the tail of the rear pastedown. One of a limited edition of 200 trade copies from a total edition of 250 published by The Alcuin Press the private press of Charles Lehman Portland Oregon. Being a calligrapher his first published books were on that topic but the press branched topically to other types of handwriting ornamentation and history. This book's design by Charles Lehman and set in Centaur display type and Janson text by Irish Setter the typesetting business of Patti Morris and Martin White. Printed by Ash Creek Press on Karma text paper. This oblong 16mo book is 6 1/2" x 9 1/4". Paginated 212-67370-77282-83286-90394-953 for 112 pp. All text block edges trimmed and the top edge gilt. Bound by the Talin Bookbindery this unique copy was not originally for sale but was created to be displayed as an example of the bindery's finest work. Small slim 8vo: 20 unnumbered leaves with 36 numbered Elizabethan-like poems chronicling the growth of a young poet’s love for a golden-haired woman the collection originally comprised 34 love poems but "All day I hear the noise of waters" and "I hear an army charging upon the land" which Yeats described as a "technical and emotional masterpiece" were added before publication. Publisher's green cloth upper cover lettered in gilt fore- and bottom edges untrimmed wove end papers some copies with laid end papers no known priority. Without the fragile transparent tissue wrapper. An exemplary example virtually pristine covers firmly attached binding tight gilt stamping sharp Slocum & Cahoon note variations in stamping. Slocum & Cahoon A5. Originally published in 1907 in London. The first authorized American edition published in New York by B. W. Huebsch appeared three months after this Cornhill issue. "Although it is widely reported that the title refers to the sound of urine tinkling in a chamber pot this is a later Joycean embellishment lending an earthiness to a title first suggested by his brother Stanislaus and which Joyce by the time of publication had come to dislike . . . In Ulysses Leopold Bloom reflects 'Chamber music. Could make a pun on that.' In fact the poetry of Chamber Music is not in the least bawdy nor reminiscent of the sound of tinkling urine. In 1909 Joyce wrote to his wife 'When I wrote Chamber Music I was a lonely boy walking about by myself at night and thinking that one day a girl would love me.'" Wikipedia "As the title suggests Chamber Music is to be considered a set of songs rather than a collection of poems as Joyce clearly stated in a letter to the English composer Geoffrey Molyneux Palmer 15 July 1909: 'I hope you may set all of Chamber Music in time.
