Dogs include: Blizzard - owned by Slim Williams; Two Husky puppies; Wolf - raced by Mary Joyce in the Alaska Dog Derby; Cheechako - owned by Lieutenant Colonel Francis E. Maslin; Rye - given to the Army at Chilkoot Barracks by Mary Joyce; Mageik - Father Hubbard's famous sled dog; Jack - racing dog owned by Grover Bayless of Fairbanks; and Smokey - a favorite among forty army dogs formerly stationed at Chilkoot Barracks. Viaggia prima per studio, poi attraversando fronti e frontiere dell'Europa occupata dai nazifascismi: Parigi, Lisbona, Londra, Marsiglia, Roma, il Sud dell'Italia dove sono arrivati gli Alleati. Documenti falsi, missioni segrete, diplomazia clandestina. Joyce, insieme al marito Emilio Lussu e ai compagni di Giustizia e Libertà, sostenuta nelle sue scelte dalla sua famiglia di origine, è in prima linea nella Resistenza. Poetessa, traduttrice, scrittrice, ha sempre coniugato pensiero (prefigurante, modernissimo) e azione. Azione che prosegue nel dopoguerra con la ricerca di poeti da tradurre per far conoscere le lotte di liberazione degli altri paesi, in particolare dell'Africa e del Curdistan. Nazim Hikmet, Agostinho Neto, i guerriglieri di Amílcar Cabral che compongono canti di lotta durante le marce, sono alcuni degli autori che Joyce 'scopre' e propone attraverso traduzioni rivoluzionarie. Rievocando le scelte, gli incontri, le occasioni, ripercorriamo l'esistenza di questa donna straordinaria (laica, cosmopolita, 'anglo-marchigiana') e il suo essere, da sempre, riferimento per molte donne e molti giovani.
Il saggio di BENCO (che era direttore di quotidiano a Trieste quando JOYCE, suo amico, era là) occupa 16 pagine, in cui parla dell'uomo, della sua famiglia, ma anche delle sue opere, e dei criteri di lettura; del 'Portrait' (Dedalus), mentre "Ulysses" cominciava ad apparire a capitoli nel 1918 tra contestazioni puritane in USA; si stava già parlando del futuro "Work in progress". JOYCE (Dublino 1882 - Zurigo 1941) nsegnò inglese a Trieste dal 1905 al 1915, poi di nuovo dopo la guerra, prima di trasferirsi a Parigi nel 1919. 'Ulysses, terminato nel 1918, fu segnalato per primo in Italia da Benco; fu pubblicato a Parigi nel 1922. Il fascicolo in-8° (cm. 24,2), bross. edit., è completo delle sue 128 pagine e contiene inoltre: 1) 1) Concetto MARCHESI, "VIRGILIO", 10 pp. 2) 15 pagine filologiche di Luigi Foscolo BENEDETTO sul Cantico delle creature di San Francesco. 3) Aldo SORANI.
