19574587New York: New Directions 1957. First Edition thus. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. First Edition thus with introduction by Edel. Very good copy in a very good dust jacket. Perhaps too much has been made of this book being Joyce's inspiration for his stream-of-consciousness method but Dujardin's minor place as a point of interest to Joyce scholars is nevertheless secure. Joyce first read the book in French in 1902; it was republished in 1924 soon after Joyce acknowledged its importance to him. This copy has been inscribed by Leon Edel who has provided an introduction for this edition: "Fredrica Laudon with fond memories of our talks last summer in Edgarton and the affectionate regards of Leon Edel. New York 1958."

New Directions hardcover books

We have more books available by this author!. viii 454 pp. "Moving away from the dark tone of her more recent masterpieces Joyce Carol Oates turns the tale of a family struggling to cope with its fall from grace into a deeply moving and unforgettable account of the vigor of hope and the power of love to prevail over suffering. The Mulvaneys of High Point Farm in Mt. Ephraim New York are a large and fortunate clan blessed with good looks abundant charisma and boundless promise. But over the twenty-five year span of this ambitious novel the Mulvaneys will slide almost imperceptibly at first from the pinnacle of happiness transformed by the vagaries of fate into a scattered collection of lost and lonely souls. It is the youngest son Judd now an adult who attempts to piece together the fragments of the Mulvaneys' former glory seeking to uncover and understand the secret violation that occasioned the family's tragic downfall. Each of the Mulvaneys endures some form of exile--physical or spiritual--but in the end they find a way to bridge the chasms that have opened up among them reuniting in the spirit of love and healing. Profoundly cathartic Oates' acclaimed novel unfolds as if in the darkness of the human spirit she has come upon a source of light at its core. Rarely has a writer made such a startling and inspiring statement about the value of hope and compassion. William Abrahams Books unknown books

1919029930Zurich: Rascher & Cie. 1919. The first German edition of Joyce's play Exiles and the first of his works to be published in translation in any language. One of 600 copies printed: Joyce was living in Zurich at the time and he paid for the publication of this book out of his own pocket. This copy is inscribed by the author: "To J.R. sic Watson Jun / with grateful regards / James Joyce / 8. ix. 1919." J.S. Watson Jr. was at the time the co-owner of the modernist literary journal The Dial which he bought from Martyn Johnson with his friend and fellow Harvard graduate Scofield Thayer. Watson became president of the magazine and Thayer became its editor. The "grateful regards" refers to a gift of $300 that Watson had sent Joyce earlier in the year at the urging of Thayer who had himself sent Joyce $700. These sums bailed Joyce out of dire financial straits allowed him to settle a court case against him and helped him support the theater group that he had associated with in Zurich the English Players. In 1920 The Dial published a piece by Joyce and in 1921 Thayer was one of his most ardent and influential supporters in the censorship case in New York against Ulysses and its publication in the Little Review. A notable association copy of Joyce's first translation. Slocum & Cahoon D44. Pages browned and acidified and covers strengthened at all the edges and spine with tape with a hole cut in the spine for the title to show through. The first blank on which the inscription appears is also strengthened at the edges with tape. Fragile and a candidate for de-acidification but a significant association copy from a critical point in Joyce's life and career. Unless otherwise noted our first editions are first printings. First Edition. Softcover. Good. Rascher & Cie. paperback books
