AN EARLY PRINTING IN HANDSOME BINDING OF THESE IMPORTANT WORKS.
From the preface: “Some apology may seem necessary for presenting a life of Mahomet at the present day when no new fact can be added to those already known concerning him. Many years ago during a residence in Madrid the author projected a series of writings illustrative of the domination of the Arabs in Spain. These were to be introduced by a sketch of the life of the founder of the Islam Faith and the first mover of Arabian conquest. Most of the particulars for this were drawn from Spanish sources and from Gagnier’s traslation of the Arabian historian Abulfeda a copy of which the author found in the Jesuits’ Library of the Convent of Isidro at Madrid.
Such is the origin of the work now given to the public; on which the author lays no claim to novelty of fact nor profundity of research. It still bears the type of a work intended for a family Library; in constructing which the whole aim of the writer has been to digest into an easy perspicuous and flowing narrative the admitted facts concerning Mahomet together with such legends and traditions as have been wrought into the whole system of oriental literature; and at the same time to give such a summary of his faith as might be sufficient for the general reader. Under such circumstances he has not thought it worth while to encumber his pages with a scaffolding of references and citations nor to depart from the old English nomenclature of oriental names.†Henry G, Bohn hardcover

As fine a set as one can hope to find. FIRST EDITION THE ENGLISH ISSUE which appeared only a few weeks after the American. In spite of the near simultaneous release the text of this English edition does differ a bit from its American counterpart.
Despite Irving's use of an imaginary chronicler Agapida who’s dialog livens up the flavor of the text the CONQUEST OF GRANADA was the product of careful historical research in Madrid. Irving was serving as a titular diplomat a post which gave him access to considerable resources as well as access to the most important inner social circles. It remains an excellent history on the expulsion of the Moors from Spain. This work along with his THE ALHAMBRA highlights both Irving’s scholarly abilities and his eloquent writing style. IMPORTANT AMERICAN EXPLORATION AND SCARCE IN FIRST EDITION. This is Washington Irving’s chronicle of the Hunt and Stuart expedition written by Irving at the request of John Jacob Astor. Astor financed the first U.S. overland expedition to the Pacific after Lewis and Clark. The “Astorians†as the party led by Wilson Price Hunt was known took an entirely different route then Lewis and Clark thus this book chronicles a number of important firsts through unexplored territory. Hunt’s party was the first to navigate the Snake River the first to cross the Tetons and Oregon Blue Mountains and the first to come through the Union Pass. Carey, Lea, & Blanchard hardcover

A very fine set richly bound. Internally near pristine and perfect the bindings extremely well preserved all solid and sturdy. THE TRUE FIRST EDITION AND A FINE SET IN VERY HANDSOME BINDINGS. RARE IN RED MOROCCO BINDINGS. While serving as a diplomatic attaché to Spain Irving had access to the fabulous library of Obadiah Rich and engaged in scholarly research. This detailed description of the Alhambra and account of the legends surrounding the famous monument was one of the fruits of this research. The flavor of Irving’s writing is scrumptious in a manner quite fitting to the Moorish landmark.
Though an American Irving published under the Crayon pseudonym was quite the literary celebrity in Europe. He was lionized by both the English and French and for several years the intimate of such notable men of letters as Scott Byron and Moore. There are a number of his works in which the London issues not those printed in New York or Philadelphia are the true first editions. It may be that the more cultured societies of Europe at that time were quicker to recognize literary genius then the more provincial Americans of the period.
