185034860London: Henry G Bohn 1850. An early issue of this work. 8vo handsomely bound in three-quarter tan calf over marbled paper covered boards the spine with gilt ruled bands red morocco lettering piece gilt. viii 268 pp. A handsome and very well preserved copy strong and tight. AN EARLY PRINTING IN HANDSOME BINDING OF THIS IMPORTANT WORK.
The author states that it was his intention in the following pages to trace the progress of the Moslem dominion from the deatgh of Mahomet A.D. 622 to the invasion of Spain A.D. 710.
From the preface to the Life of Mahomet: “Some apology may seem necessary for presenting a life of Mahomet at the present day when no new fact can be added to those already known concerning him. Many years ago during a residence in Madrid the author projected a series of writings illustrative of the domination of the Arabs in Spain. These were to be introduced by a sketch of the life of the founder of the Islam Faith and the first mover of Arabian conquest. Most of the particulars for this were drawn from Spanish sources and from Gagnier’s traslation of the Arabian historian Abulfeda a copy of which the author found in the Jesuits’ Library of the Convent of Isidro at Madrid.
Such is the origin of the work now given to the public; on which the author lays no claim to novelty of fact nor profundity of research. It still bears the type of a work intended for a family Library; in constructing which the whole aim of the writer has been to digest into an easy perspicuous and flowing narrative the admitted facts concerning Mahomet together with such legends and traditions as have been wrought into the whole system of oriental literature; and at the same time to give such a summary of his faith as might be sufficient for the general reader. Under such circumstances he has not thought it worth while to encumber his pages with a scaffolding of references and citations nor to depart from the old English nomenclature of oriental names.†Henry G, Bohn hardcover

183225081London: Henry Colburn and Richard Bentley 1832. 2 volumes. First Edition the UK issue the true first issue printed prior to the American issue according to BAL. 8vo in fine and beautiful contemporary bindings of full red crushed morocco the boards decorated with a bright and thick gilt frame of stylized morning-glories and additional gilt ruling the spines with elaborate gilt floral compartments between gilt tooled bands two compartments gilt lettered additional gilt lettering at the foot board edges gilt tooled as are the turn-ins a.e.g. viii 312; 295. A very fine set richly bound. Internally near pristine and perfect the bindings extremely well preserved all solid and sturdy. THE TRUE FIRST EDITION AND A FINE SET IN VERY HANDSOME BINDINGS. RARE IN RED MOROCCO BINDINGS. While serving as a diplomatic attaché to Spain Irving had access to the fabulous library of Obadiah Rich and engaged in scholarly research. This detailed description of the Alhambra and account of the legends surrounding the famous monument was one of the fruits of this research. The flavor of Irving’s writing is scrumptious in a manner quite fitting to the Moorish landmark.
Though an American Irving published under the Crayon pseudonym was quite the literary celebrity in Europe. He was lionized by both the English and French and for several years the intimate of such notable men of letters as Scott Byron and Moore. There are a number of his works in which the London issues not those printed in New York or Philadelphia are the true first editions. It may be that the more cultured societies of Europe at that time were quicker to recognize literary genius then the more provincial Americans of the period.
