1963017874Paris France: Gallimard 1963. First Edition First Thus . Soft Cover/Stiched. Near Fine/None as Issued. BRAND NEW COPY w/un-cut pages; showing surface discoloration to softcover. French language text. Full-length play translated into English as "Exit the King" by Romanian-French playwright Eugène Ionesco 1909 - 1994. Drama was first performed 1962 the Theatre de l'Alliance Paris. An absurdist drama in the other plays of the "Berenger Cycle" in which Berenger appears as a depressed insecure everyman prone to sentimentality. In this play he is King Berenger the First who all powerful is now more than 400 years in age. Story begins as he is informed that he is dying and likewise his kingdom is crumbling around him as his physical capabilities deteriorate. First in denial The King faces reality lapses into the Berenger mode of sentimentality and accepts looming death --- characters disappear one by one leaving the King now unable to speak alone his first queen who prepares him for the end. Of the play Ionesco said he wrote it while ill and frightened his own death. Le Roi se Meurt is an attempt to help in the preparation for death ---- we are all dying men who refuse to die. A tale of everyman's essential solitude and insignificanceof human existence.

Gallimard paperback
