107744Paris: Gallimard 1975. INSCRIBED COPY WITH TWO TYPED LETTERS SIGNED First edition thus first impression. Out-of-series copy from an edition of 55 inscribed by the author "A H. Gene Blocker avec toute ma sympathie Eugène Ionesco" on the half-title. With two typed letters signed from Ionesco to Blocker who was professor of philosopher at Ohio University; the letters discuss the possibility of a lecture series in the United States. In the first letter dated 18 December 1975 Ionesco politely declines Blocker's invitation: "Unfortunately my command of English doesn't allow me to do a lecture in English. I just read some easy texts and I understand a little English language but I don't speak English at all. So I think that my visit to the States wouldn't be of any interest". The second letter dated 29 December reveals a volte-face. Ionesco having since received a letter dated 12 December and now writing in French thanks Block for his invitation which he is professedly keen to use in order to lecture on the Theatre of the Absurd and issues of intellectual freedom in Europe. He also encloses the present copy. This is the first edition of L'homme aux valises; A Hell of a Mess was the American title of Ce formidable bordel first published in 1973. Octavo. Original cream light card wrappers printed in red and black. Two laid-in foolscap typed letters 300 x 210 mm the first dated on copy paper the second on wove paper. Spine creased as usual a few faint markings to front panel and light crease to upper outer corner of rear. A very good copy. Letters neatly creased where folded the first with a few discreet uses of corrective fluid the second very slightly nicked at upper left corner and negligibly marked with very faint spotting along inner edge recto and verso: very good condition overall. unknown

The four wonderful surreal lithographs were drawn by the author Ionesco and were printed on Fabriano 'Unbria' by Erker Presse Franz larese and Jurg Janett in St. Gallen Switzerland. The paper was made at Cartiere Enrico Magnani in Pescia Italy. The book is unread and unmarked and except to photograph it's contents unopened. The Book is bound in fine creme parchment as is the printed jacket. The velvet lined slip case is bound in the same parchment except for the top and bottom edge which is fine red Morocco leather. The book starts with a conversation between Eugene Ionesco and Verena Heyden-Rumsch in paris in 1987 which has been translated by Barbara Wright. Ionesco has been quoted as saying about this and other plays and writings " My sole concern is the constant attempt to split apart the veil of appearances." In this play which is a journey to the extremities of death has the veil of appearances not been completely split have we not arrived on the other side- the side of truth asks Heyden-Rumsch." No we are caught up in that split." states Ionesco. A wonderful and fascinating look at a modern almost abstract master of modern literature. A Rare and collectible copy signed by Ionesco.

The Limited Editions Club paperback
