Good. Third thousand. First published 1863. Includes the frontispiece illustrating the progression of skeletons from the lesser apes through to humans. Huxley showed that in the visible characters man differs less from thehigher apes than do the latter from lower members of the same order of primates. Huxley who earned the nickname 'Darwin's Bulldog' for his outspoken defense of the theory of evolution through natural selection wrote this present work in response to the well-known Hippocampus minor controversy of the 1860s. Huxley challenged the paleontologist Richard Owen who asserted that a human's brain differed qualitatively from those of other mammals. After a series of dissections of primate brains Huxley disproved Owen's claim that only humans possessed a Hippocampus minor a portion of the brain now known as the calcar avis.Garrison & Morton 165. 1858411
Folio 36.2 x 26.2 cm. x 143 pp.; 12 engraved plates with explanatory text leaves a few text figures. Original quarter linen over limp boards. Printed label with title mounted on front board. = Written by Darwin's Bulldog the zoologist Thomas Henry Huxley 1825-1895 who was a ship's assistant surgeon and naturalist on board of HMS Rattlesnake. The Rattlesnake charted the Great Barrier Reef and the seas northwards to New Guinea. Huxley's paper On the anatomy and the affinities of the family of Medusae' was published in 1849 by the Royal Society in its Philosophical Transactions. Huxley united the Hydroid and Sertularian polyps with the Medusae to form a class to which he subsequently gave the name of Hydrozoa. The connection he made was that all the members of the class consisted of two cell layers enclosing a central cavity or stomach. This is characteristic of the phylum now called the Cnidaria. He compared this feature to the serous and mucous structures of embryos of higher animals. When at last he got a grant from the Royal Society for the printing of plates Huxley was able to summarise this work in The Oceanic Hydrozoa published by the Ray Society in 1859'. The value of Huxley's work was recognised and on returning to England in 1850 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society. In the following year at the age of twenty-six he not only received the Royal Society Medal but was also elected to the Council Wikipedia. On the front pastedown an armorial bookplate of the Rashleigh family Menabilly. At least one Rashleigh Jonathan junior 1845-1872 was interested in marine biology. A pencilled annotation on the Ray Society title. Boards and spine a bit worn at edges; text and plates mostly clean. A very good copy housed in a custom dark green slipcase with paper label. 1883453251883.
Huxley Thomas Henry 1825-95. Etched portrait mounted by Leopold Flameng after the 1883 portrait by John Collier 1850-1934 signed in the plate by Huxley. London: The Fine Art Society 1 January 1885. 583 x 423 mm.; mount measures 604 x 440. Scattered foxing small tear in lower margin not affecting image but very good. Small embossed stamp in lower right corner.

From the portrait of Huxley painted in 1883 by his son-in-law pre-Raphaelite painter John Collier. This version of the print is very scarce; this is the first copy we have seen or handled in over 50 years. Based on the large brow ridges shown on the skull that Huxley is holding in the portrait it is probable that Huxley is holding a Neanderthal skull the significance of which Huxley originally publicized in his Man's Place in Nature 1863. Collier was married to two of Huxley's daughters: First to Marian Mady a talented painter in her own right; and after Mady's death to her younger sister Ethel. The original of Collier's portrait now hangs in the National Portrait Gallery.
. unknown books

He veered off lured by a new promise and would never finish the tentacled mollusks. . . The Crayfish might not sound like a stimulating book. But it was destined for the International Scientific Series. The ISS now stretched from physics to psychology and beyond. It outdid the evangelical presses in pumping out rationalist books for Everyman. A huge force for deterministic and social evolution it mixed modernity and notoriety to sell titles through umpteen editions. . . He started The Crayfish after the Summer holidays in 1878 giving his own text an alluring evolutionary gloss. He intended it as the beginning of his own series. He would take readers from the 'insignificant' and common-or-garden into the profound depths." Desmond. 1862001928
London: Robert Hardwicke 1862. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Very Good. Small slim 8vo pp157 2 pages of adverts with small b/w illustrations in the text to pages 9 11 15 36 and 40. Hardcover no dust jacket. Binding of green cloth with gilt titles to spine and blind stamped designs to boards and spine in very good condition with a little rubbing to edges and tips. Inside starting to crack pages 106/107 but all pages still well bound and secure and in lovely clean and bright condition with no foxing marking or aging. Dubbing himself 'Darwin's bulldog' Huxley is primarily known as a popularizer of Darwin's theory and also for his war with theology and consequently invented what he conceived to be the appropriate title of 'agnostic'. From 1860 to 1863 Huxley developed his ideas presenting them in lectures to working men students and the general public followed by publication. Also in 1862 a series of talks to working men was printed lecture by lecture as pamphlets later bound up as a little green book; the first copies went on sale in December and prompted Darwin to write in dismay to Huxley stating of his six lectures "They are simply perfect" even though Huxley himself did not intend them to be widely circulated. An excellent copy of this very scarce first clothbound edition.

Robert Hardwicke hardcover
