"A nightmarish prognostication of a future in which humanity has been destroyed by science. easily Huxley's most popular and many good judges continue to think his best novel" DNB. "After the success of his first three novels Huxley abandoned the fictional milieu of literary London and directed his satire toward an imagined future. He admitted that the original idea of Brave New World was to challenge H.G. Wells' Utopian vision. The novel also marks Huxley's increasing disenchantment with the world which was to result in his leaving England for California in 1937 in search of a more spiritual life. The book was immediately successful" Parker & Kermode 161-62. Named by Modern Library as one of the 100 Greatest Novels of the twentieth century. Garden City Publishing Co hardcover books

Number 108 of 200 numbered copies signed by Aldous Huxley. In near fine condition. A very sharp example. Written at the height of his powers immediately after Brave New World Aldous Huxley's highly acclaimed Eyeless in Gaza is his most personal novel. Huxley's bold nontraditional narrative tells the loosely autobiographical story of Anthony Beavis a cynical libertine Oxford graduate who comes of age in the vacuum left by World War I. Unfulfilled by his life loves and adventures Anthony is persuaded by a charismatic friend to become a Marxist and take up arms with Mexican revolutionaries. But when their disastrous embrace of violence nearly kills them Anthony is left shattered--and is forced to find an alternative to the moral disillusionment of the modern world. 19722835331972. Very Good binding. A small archive of correspondence between Sir Julian Huxley the scientist writer and brother of Aldous Huxley and a Mr. John T. Parks of Richardson Texas. ~There are four autograph letters signed and written by Sir Julian. In them Huxley comments on such things as the burning of the White House in the War of 1812 various species of fish and the vices of the Arabs. Of the Arabs he comments: "their greatest trouble was the power of the different sheiks - which led to a form of tribalism and hindered unity. Oil has helped some materially - but even the oil 'kingdoms' are very backward as regards education & health. Let us hope that this division will continue so as to prevent mass war against Israel." This written a mere year before the Yom Kippur War. ~Sir Julian's handwritten letters are at times difficult to transcribe and the archive helpfully includes typed transcripts of them. ~~Correspondent John Parks requested autographs for certain copies of Sir Julian's works one of which is included with the letters: an off-print copy of "World Population" from Scientific American signed by Sir Julian on the front cover. The archive also includes correspondence between Mr. Parks and publishers as well as the subscription department at The New Yorker: "For the trouble I caused him . I asked him and Lady Huxley what they would like short of a herd of longhorn steers . and he said he rather thought that a subscription to The New Yorker would do nicely". Finally includes an autographed letter signed by Judith Huxley daughter-in-law of Aldous thanking the Mr. Parks for the loan of a book. Very Good binding. unknown books

Laid in are three typed letters signed by Huxley to Joe Ferrier one of which reads in part "I much appreciate your continuing interest in my writings - as much as I regret the appalling untidiness of this typing. My non-proficiency increases with the years and the typewriter is now nearly as old as I am; a few more years and in this age of word-processors etc.; it may become a valuable antique. This version of the print is very scarce; this is the first copy we have seen or handled in over 50 years. Based on the large brow ridges shown on the skull that Huxley is holding in the portrait it is probable that Huxley is holding a Neanderthal skull the significance of which Huxley originally publicized in his Man's Place in Nature 1863. Collier was married to two of Huxley's daughters: First to Marian Mady a talented painter in her own right; and after Mady's death to her younger sister Ethel. The original of Collier's portrait now hangs in the National Portrait Gallery. </p> . unknown books
