He veered off lured by a new promise and would never finish the tentacled mollusks. . . The Crayfish might not sound like a stimulating book. But it was destined for the International Scientific Series. The ISS now stretched from physics to psychology and beyond. It outdid the evangelical presses in pumping out rationalist books for Everyman. A huge force for deterministic and social evolution it mixed modernity and notoriety to sell titles through umpteen editions. . . He started The Crayfish after the Summer holidays in 1878 giving his own text an alluring evolutionary gloss. He intended it as the beginning of his own series. He would take readers from the 'insignificant' and common-or-garden into the profound depths." Desmond. "The Crayfish his famous volume in the International Scientific Series has been called by Professor Howes the assistant and successor of Huxley at the Royal College of Science 'PROBABLY THE BEST BIOLOGICAL TREATISE EVER WRITTEN.'" Specifically it tells the story of Mrs. Aldwinkle and her companions who gather in Italy to recreate the literary achievements and cultural glory of the Italian Renaissance. However each member of the group which includes a philosopher a poet and a novelist among others proves in his or her own way to fall short of Mrs. Aldwinkle's expectations of grandeur. The book's title is derived from Wordsworth's poem "The Tables Turned" which concludes with the stanza: "Enough of Science and of Art; / Close up those barren leaves; / Come forth and bring with you a heart / That watches and receives." . 1954190560London: Chatto & Windus 1954. First UK edition. In 1952 Huxley contacted the psychiatric researcher Humphry Osmond requesting that he be allowed to take the psychedelic drug mescaline under observation. Huxley felt that the brain restricts consciousness and was hoping that mescaline would increase awareness; The Doors of Perception was Huxley's account of the subsequent experiment which took place in May 1953. The work takes its title from William Blake's The Marriage of Heaven and Hell 1793: "If the doors of perception were cleansed every thing would appear to man as it is: Infinite. For man has closed himself up till he sees all things thro' narrow chinks of his cavern". Huxley's detailing of the aesthetic and psychological revelations he experienced while under the influence of mescaline prompted his publishers to say of the manuscript that: "You are the most articulate guinea pig that any scientist could hope to engage" Murray p. 399. The UK edition was preceded by the US edition by eight days. Octavo. Original blue cloth spine lettered in gilt bottom edge untrimmed. With dust jacket designed by John Woodcock.
