Publisher's brown top stain. With darkened strips to the endpapers and toning to the pages else very fresh. In the dust jacket which is torn in half. The story of a Hollywood millionaire who fears his approaching death. Originally published in the UK this novel was published later the same year in the United States under the title "After Many a Summer Dies the Swan."<br /> <br /> From the dust jacket-<br /> <br /> "Central to this extravaganza is the story at once grotesque and painful farcical and reflective of an attempt to prolong the span of human life. But in terms of this rather nightmarish tale of the adventures of a rich man terrified of death the book treats of the ultimate topics of all philosophy- bondage and liberation reality and illusion the problem of good the nature of evil and finally of course causality the great empirical fact that God is not mocked together with that other empirical fact that men are for ever trying to mock God with results that are invariably disastrous. But it is neither the sickly nor the men of affairs who fill the Grand Hotels and the pockets of their proprietors. It is those who travel 'for pleasure' as the phrase goes. What Epicurus who never travelled except when he was banished sought in his own garden our tourists seek abroad. And do they find their happiness Those who freqeuent the places where they resort must often find this question with a tentative answer in the negative fairly forced upon them. For tourists are in the main a very gloomy-looking tribe. I have seen much brighter faces at a funeral than in the Piazza of St. Mark's. Only when they can band together and pretend for a brief precarious hour that they are at home do the majority of tourists look really happy. One wonders why they come abroad. The face is that very few travellers really like travelling. If they go to the trouble and expense of travelling it is not so much from curiosity for fun or because they like to see things beautiful and strange as out of a kind of snobbery. People travel for the same reason as they collect works of art: because the best people do it. To have been to certain spots on the earth's surface is socially correct; and having been there one is superior to those who have not." -- from the quite witty and splendid opening. 1936138804London: Chatto & Windus 1936. First edition of Huxley's classic work which many consider one of his finest. Octavo original cloth. Near fine in a near fine dust jacket with light shelfwear. An exceptional example. Written at the height of his powers immediately after Brave New World Aldous Huxley's highly acclaimed Eyeless in Gaza is his most personal novel. Huxley's bold nontraditional narrative tells the loosely autobiographical story of Anthony Beavis a cynical libertine Oxford graduate who comes of age in the vacuum left by World War I. Unfulfilled by his life loves and adventures Anthony is persuaded by a charismatic friend to become a Marxist and take up arms with Mexican revolutionaries. But when their disastrous embrace of violence nearly kills them Anthony is left shattered—and is forced to find an alternative to the moral disillusionment of the modern world. Journalist Simon Heffer has called the novel Huxley’s best book and single ‘great novel’. For Heffer the book both harkens back to Huxley’s early satires and links to the more serious and philosophical concerns of his later novels. Chatto & Windus hardcover

42673John Henry 1831-1883 Architect based in Birmingham saying that "Far be it from me to forget the Birmingham & Midland Institute & the many kind receptions I have met with from its members - but I have had a warning to abstain from all work that can be avoided and I am sorry to say that I must give you the Popes answer 'Non possumus'." 2 side 8vo. 26 Abbey Place London NW 21st July date not clear but From 1870 onwards Huxley was to some extent drawn away from scientific research by the claims of public duty. He served on eight Royal Commissions from 1862 to 1884. From 1871 to 1880 he was a Secretary of the Royal Society and from 1883 to 1885 he was president. He was president of the Geological Society from 1868 to 1870. In 1870 he was president of the British Association at Liverpool and in the same year was elected a member of the newly constituted London School Board. Huxley is known as "Darwin's Bulldog" for his advocacy of Charles Darwin's theory of evolution. Some time in 1871 Huxley had been found to have a heart condition and hence his reference to reducing his work load. The phrase 'decree of non possumus' means 'We Cannot' and would be the first words of a Papal decree when he is refusing something. The red armorial stamp is from an auction of 1917 to raise money for the War Effort. The previous owner had acquired this item from a collection sold in this auction. unknown
