71863London: Chatto and Windus 1954. Literature FIRST EDITION first impression. Octavo 19 x 13cm pp.63 1. Publisher's blue cloth with gilt titles to spine. Internally crisp and clean with toning to spine and board edges. Near fine. Huxley's distress at what he regarded as the spiritual bankruptcy of the modern world led him towards mysticism and the use of hallucinatory drugs. This exploratory essay in which he describes the use of mescaline to induce visionary states of mind sparked a generation of drug experimentation and it continues to challenge beliefs about the drugs condoned and forbidden in society. Like his contemporaries D.H. Lawrence and George Orwell Huxley abhorred conformity and denounced the orthodox attitudes of his time. The enormous range of his intellect and the pungency of his writing make him one of the most significant voices of the early 20th century. Book Collector No.287 p32-62 'The Sixties'.
