1953391981New York: Harper & Brothers 1953. Hardcover. Very Good. Reprint. Light stain on a couple of pages modest wear at the spine ends near very good lacking the dustwrapper. With the bookplate of the important rocket scientist and influential science-fiction fan John Drury Clark the bookplate has one corner folded under. In addition to writing an important book on rocket propulsion as well as a couple of stories in "Astounding Stories" Clark was also instrumental in revitalizing and promoting the career of Robert E. Howard. He was college roommates with L. Sprague de Camp who he encouraged to write science fiction stories introduced de Camp to his sometime co-writer Fletcher Pratt and eventually married Pratt's widow Inga. His previous marriage prompted Pratt to form a club of science fiction writers and scientists called The Trap Door Spiders so that they wouldn't have to socialize with Clark's first wife. Isaac Asimov later fictionalized the club as a group of mystery solvers The Black Widowers. Harper & Brothers hardcover

19542018196<p>If I'm not mistaken this is the first US edition of Huxley's <em>The Doors of Perception. </em>This particular copy has a dust jacket in poor condition with pieces of the jacket missing especially a large chunk out of the part that would be covering the spine see pictures. The book itself is on the low end of good condition: the binding of the pages is loose although no pages are missing or tearing out. Some foxing on the front and back pastedowns and endpapers and on the fore-edge of the text block. Significant shelf wear on the head and tail of the cover.</p> Harper & Brothers hardcover

In 1952 Huxley contacted the psychiatric researcher Humphry Osmond requesting that he be allowed to take the psychedelic drug mescaline under observation. Huxley felt that the brain restricts consciousness and was hoping that mescaline would increase awareness; The Doors of Perception was Huxley's account of the subsequent experiment which took place in May 1953. The work takes its title from William Blake's The Marriage of Heaven and Hell 1793: "If the doors of perception were cleansed every thing would appear to man as it is: Infinite. For man has closed himself up till he sees all things thro' narrow chinks of his cavern". Huxley's detailing of the aesthetic and psychological revelations he experienced while under the influence of mescaline prompted his publishers to say of the manuscript that: "You are the most articulate guinea pig that any scientist could hope to engage" Murray p. 399. The UK edition was preceded by the US edition by eight days. Octavo. Original blue cloth spine lettered in gilt bottom edge untrimmed. With dust jacket designed by John Woodcock.
