Le Riverend, reproduction d'une lettre de Gréard de L'université de France, académie de Paris, pour remercier l'auteur de lui avoir envoyé son texte en …1885, le 21 janvier !, prologue, table des chapitres, table des gravures, Charles Carpentier (1818 - 1887) était avocat à la Cour d'Appel de Paris. Notre roman d'anticipation est, à ma connaissance, le seul écrit de cet avocat. Comme l'indique la copie de la lettre de Gréard du 21 janvier 1885, il semblerai que ce texte fut écrit plutôt en 1884, comme l'indique aussi sa "prépublication" dans la revue "Au Théâtre" du jeudi 3 juillet 1884 et publié à Avranches. Un autre problème : concernant l'illustration de ce petit roman, il est indiqué sur la page de titre qu'il s'agit de G. Le Riverend, mais il faut peut-être penser qu'il s'agit de Louis Le Riverend, très connu à l'époque alors qu'un G.(Georges) n'est nulle part signaler ! Ce roman se passe dans les dessous de la terre, dans la région d'Avranches, où vivrat une population d'hommes venant de l'antiquité romaine. Il n'y a pas vraiment d'intrigue mais la description de leur vie est remarquable. Le destin de ces troglodytes romains sera d'être englouti sous des tonnes de roches. réf. Costes - Altairac 397. INTROUVABLE dans cette édition originale, voire même en réédition. Etat moyen; les plats de la reliure sont élimés avec manques de papier, quelques salissures au papier et 1 page recollé mais sans manque. Vu la rareté de cet ouvrage, je peux dire qu'il est en bon état !
